Frequently asked questions
Personal Directory
No. There is a tool called the Address Book Synchronizer. This tool will synchronize your Outlook contacts with the Personal Address Book. Please contact Network Services at
switch@uvic.ca if you would like to use this feature. We will provide you with the software and instructions you need to make use of this powerful tool. There is also a feature that will be available in the future that will allow you to "click to dial" a person directly from a Microsoft Outlook contact.
Cisco VoIP telephones allow you to have two separate lists of dialing short cuts: Fast Dials and Speed Dials—separate but related entities. Fast Dials are a list of contacts that are stored on your phone and accessed through the phones menu. Speed Dials can only be accessed by pressing a two-digit code; they cannot be displayed on your phone. Fast Dials are useful for occassional contact numbers that you would like to be able to find quickly. Speed Dials are useful for contacts you call frequently and need at a moment's notice.
Personal Address Book PIN
No. Personal Directory and the voicemail system are separate entities. You can, however, set your Personal Directory's PIN to the same as your voicemail PIN. That way you won't need to remember another PIN number.
No, you don't have to log in. However, without logging in the Personal Directory cannot display your saved directory entries. If all you want to do is perform simple UVic directory searches then logging in is unnecessary.
Generally, no. Most Cisco IP Phones are located in secure locations (i.e. your office) where it's fine to leave the phone logged into your personal directory if you leave and lock the door. Only if you're worried that someone could use your phone to view confidential contacts should you logout.
