Frequently asked questions

Why should I buy a TSC standard phone?

  1. Only TSC phones are compatible with the university telephone system.
  2. You will get a modern, reliable phone that will meet your administrative needs.
  3. All phones include a one-year warranty, and Network Services offers efficient troubleshooting and repair services.
  4. We offer a swap-out service if for some reason your phone does not meet your work requirements.

How do I order a telephone or softphone?

Click the "Buy Now" button beneath the telephone unit that you are interested in and you will be directed to an online ordering form. Please complete the form with as much information as possible. Your request will then be sent to Network Services for approval. A Request Tracker (RT) ticket be created under your name and email address for processing.

Why is the cost higher when Voicemail is requested when ordering a softphone?

The subscription cost associated with a softphone client used in conjunction with voicemail costs more.

Which telephone is right for me?

Which model is appropriate for each location is subjective. The CP7821 and CP7841 models suit office environments. The CP7841 offers higher data throughput rates over the CP7821, CP7942 and CP7962 models. Workstations that use higher data rates for activities such as large file transfers, backups and software updates may benefit from the CP7841.

When will my phone arrive?

You should allow for 2 weeks delivery time from the day that you place your order. Once we receive your request, we will create an RT ticket and contact you to confirm your order. Installations are typically performed on Thursdays and Fridays.

Please note that if you require a new telephone line or other installation, this could take significantly longer. If you need your phone installed by a particular date, please provide enough lead time and discuss the potential installation work with Network Services well in advance.

Where will my new phone be delivered?

Your new phone will be delivered to the location specified in the RT. This can be your desktop support person, your department's general office, or your office. Alternatively, you can pick your phone up at the Technology Solutions Centre.

Where can I find phone or softphone manuals and user guides?

Please see the Phone manuals page.

Does the CP-8831 include built-in microphones or do we need to separately purchase Wired or Wireless MICs?

The CP-8831 comes with built in microphones that provide;

  • 160-degrees conical pattern provides even coverage of listening area.
  • Four Hemi-Cardioid microphones perfectly spaced that combine to provide a 180-degree pick-up pattern around the device.
    • Speech is captured at the same level at all points around the Cisco Unified IP Conference Phone 8831.

Common reasons for purchasing external microphones:

  • Wired microphones
    • Extend the operational range of the Cisco Unified IP Conference Phone 8831 with even coverage around the periphery of the device with 7 feet of additional reach.
  • Wireless microphones
    • Provide additional coverage with the added flexibility of 300 feet of range.

What if my phone does not meet my needs?

After you buy a phone, you may request to upgrade or downgrade your phone within 60 days of the initial install. You will be charged or refunded the difference between the two models. Please note that the phone and cords must be in "as new" condition, meaning clean (no scuffs, strains, or marks) and non-stretched or twisted cords. For hygienic reasons, the original handset (i.e. receiver) and its curly cord will remain with the client and only the base of the unit will be swapped.

If a new phone is requested after 60 days of the initial install, no swap will be offered. Instead, a completely new set will be installed and the client will be responsible for paying the full price of the new model. The original phone remains with the department for deployment elsewhere. If you have a damaged phone that needs replacing, please contact Network Services at 250-721-8555 or switch@uvic.ca for a cost estimate.

Can I use an existing phone instead of buying a new one?

Yes, but it must be a VoIP phone that is supported by Network Services. Please contact Network Services at 250-721-8555 or switch@uvic.ca to see if your phone qualifies.

If I get a new phone, what happens with my old one?

The original phone remains with the department for deployment elsewhere. If you have a damaged phone that needs replacing, please contact Network Services at 250-721-8555 or switch@uvic.ca for a cost estimate.
