The Politics of the Euro Crisis: The Creation of New EU Institutions and their Impact on Member States

Two days of workshops and panel discussions brought together an interdisciplinary group of international academic experts from the fields of Political Science, History, Economics, Business, and Law as well as policy practitioners, to examine the institutions built by the European Union (EU) in response to the economic crisis. By examining individual crisis measures introduced by the EU and exploring in depth the functioning of the measures, scholars asked why these institutions in particular were selected but not others. Topics such as banking integration, bank bailouts, the European Systemic Risk Board, deposit guarantees, sovereign bailouts, the European Central Bank, and fiscal union, as well as innovations in EU governance and political leadership through the crisis were explored. These sessions are co-sponsored by a SSHRC Connection grant, the EUCE, the Centre for Global Studies, and the Departments of Political Science and Economics and the School of Business.

The sessions built upon research currently being led by Dr. Amy Verdun as part of a SSHRC project entitled ‘The Politics of the Euro Crisis: The Creation of New EU Institutions and their Impact on Member States’.

Feb 24 sessions were at the University Club, 番茄社区
Feb 25 sessions were at the Laurel Point Inn
