Flexibility toolkit

The early days of the pandemic created a crash course in remote work. Since then, the university’s approach to workplace flexibility has evolved.  While not all roles are suited to remote work, we believe that most roles can incorporate some form of flexibility.

UVic’s approach to flexibility includes both WHERE work happens and WHEN work happens.

Where work happens: The results of two surveys confirm that most staff and supervisors support the ability to work at home at least part of the time, where operationally feasible.

When work happens: Some roles need to be campus-based because that is where the work is.  Where possible, flexibility around hours of work, scheduling, use of time off and voluntary reductions in workload provides campus-based staff flexible options.  These options must be supported by the applicable collective agreements.

Flexibility Framework Principles

UVic takes a principle-based approach to flexibility.  Determining the criteria for flexibility request approval and making decisions that work for the whole team are best determined at the departmental level.

Types of Flexibility

Campus Flex

Work requires being on campus, but some flexibility is possible in hours of work, schedule or use of leave entitlements. More on Campus Flex.

Hybrid Flex

A combination of working on campus and working from home (previously referred to as Remote Work Arrangements).  Scheduling may be fixed or flexible depending on department criteria.  More on Hybrid Flex.

Remote Flex

Work is fully remote with limited campus presence.  This option is rare and only approved in exceptional circumstances. More on Remote Flex.
