Microsoft 365 is a cloud-based service that combines Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with cloud services like OneDrive, Exchange Online (email), Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint. Power Platform allows you to connect your Microsoft 365 services in new ways, like:

  • Automation
  • Data flow capabilities
  • Low-code application development

All UVic Microsoft 365 accounts have access to and .

Power BI Pro is available for UVic employees only. Departments can purchase top-up licensing for affiliates by contacting the Technology Solutions Centre.

University Systems only provides access to UVic's Power Platform service. You're responsible for maintaining any Power Apps and Power Automate flows you create.

Power Automate

Power Automate helps you create automated workflows between Microsoft 365 apps and services to synchronize files, get notifications, collect data, and more. Some examples of what it can do are:

  • Automate business processes.
  • Send automatic reminders for past due tasks.
  • Move business data between systems on a schedule.
  • Connect to every Microsoft 365 service.
  • Automate tasks on your local computer like computing data in Excel.

You can use cloud flows in many M365 applications

Power Automate can connect to over 800 data sources. We've created a list of power automate connectors suitable for use at UVic. All uses of Power Automate are subject to UVic privacy and security policies.

The following lists the Power Platform connectors available to UVic Microsoft 365 accounts. This list will be updated if new connectors are included.

Please contact the UVic Computer Help Desk if you are interested in a Power Platform connector not currently permitted for use.

Power Apps

Power Apps is a data platform that uses a suite of apps, services, and connectors to provide a rapid app development environment for your business needs. Using Power Apps, you can quickly build custom business apps that connect to your data stored in Microsoft 365 (SharePoint Online, Teams, etc). Apps built using Power Apps provide rich business logic and workflow capabilities to transform your manual business operations into digital, automated processes.

Apps built using Power Apps have a responsive design and can run seamlessly in browser and on mobile devices (phone or tablet). Power Apps "democratizes" the business-app-building experience by enabling users to create feature-rich, custom business apps without writing code.

Microsoft Dataverse access for Power Apps is only available to UVic Microsoft 365 accounts in the limited capacity afforded through .

Power BI

Power BI is a collection of software services, apps, and connectors that work together to turn your unrelated sources of data into coherent, visually immersive, and interactive insights. Power BI lets you easily connect to your data sources, visualize and discover what's important, and share that with anyone or everyone you want. Some examples of what it can do are:

  • Enable you to analyze data from multiple sources, like Excel spreadsheets and databases.
  • Create customized dashboards for your department team or research group.
  • Integrate with data models created with R programming language.
  • Publish data visualization reports that refresh automatically to stay up-to-date.

Using Power BI at UVic

UVic employees have access to Power BI Pro licenses through their Microsoft 365 accounts. There are some premium features that may not be available at this time.

Depending on intended use, you may need to create a shared Power BI workspace. Contact the Computer Help Desk to request one.
