Financial aid

We offer many forms of financial aid to graduate students at UVic.

Bursaries

Bursaries are non-repayable awards based on financial need and good academic standing.

Application

There are two opportunities for general bursary application each year. Applications are open:

  • May 1 to June 1 for the summer session (May to August)
  • August 14 to October 15 for the winter session (September to April)

Only one application is needed per session. Once you apply, you’ll be considered for all available bursaries in that session.

Eligibility

  • You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
  • You must be receiving the maximum full-time government student loans for the study period.
  • You must be in full-time status as determined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Loans & grants

The federal and provincial/territorial governments provides student loans and grants for Canadian citizens and permanent residents studying at the post-secondary level.

This funding comes through two channels:

  • Repayable student loans, which are interest-free while you are a full-time student
  • Non-repayable grants for students with demonstrated financial need

Emergency loan funding

UVic has an emergency loan fund administered by Student Awards and Financial Aid.

The emergency loan fund offers short-term assistance to students with unexpected financial circumstances. This includes things like:

  • exceptional personal living costs
  • unexpected delays in government loans or other award funding

Students must be in full-time studies and good academic standing to qualify.
