New research shows higher impact of marine heatwaves on corals

New research from UVic Professor of Ocean Ecology and Global Change Julia Baum and team reveals that the impacts of climate change-induced marine heatwaves on corals and biodiversity are even more severe than initially anticipated. 

Our 2023 SDG rankings

The 2023 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings rated UVic:

  • 9th in the world overall and 3rd in Canada for university contributions to the United Nations' SDGs, out of 1,591 institutions
  • 3rd in the world and 1st in Canada for Climate action
  • 4th in the world for Sustainable cities and communities 
  • 6th in Canada and 44th globally for Partnerships for the goals (up 38 spots from 2022)
  • 11th in the world and 2nd in Canada for Life below water

Collaborating across disciplines

The interdisciplinary expertise within UVic research centres, institutes and entities is making a positive impact across the region and around the globe. 

Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS)

PICS is a multi-university institute—including UVic, SFU, UBC and UNBC—that co-develops and co-delivers climate solutions research and programming with diverse partners across BC and beyond.

International Training Centre for Authorities & Leaders (CIFAL)
