School of Social Work Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Allan and Ora Jones Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Social Work who are permanent residents of BC and intend to pursue a career in either corrections or child welfare in BC. Preference is for students who are parents.

Arthur C. Abrahamson Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies 

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in the Distance Education Bachelor of Social Work Program. The intent of the bursaries is to assist students who encounter severe financial difficulties in returning to full or part-time studies. The bursaries are awarded in memory of Arthur C. (Art) Abrahamson who, as a consultant to the School of Social Work in its early years, was a source of immense help to students and faculty.

Dianne Bourne Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded offered to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Social Work, who are in or are planning a career in child welfare practice, with preference for those who want to work in northern British Columbia. Part-time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term).

Herta Hartmanshenn Bursary in Social Work*

One undergraduate bursary and one graduate bursary are awarded to single parents registered in degree programs in Social Work. Undergraduate students must be registered in a minimum of 9.0 units of study and graduate students must be registered with the Faculty of Graduate Studies on a full time basis for winter session. If there is no qualifying graduate student in a particular year, the second award will be given to a qualifying Undergraduate student.

Jean Marie Sherwin Bursary in Social Work*

A bursary is awarded to a student in the School of Social Work who has completed third year, is preceeding to fourth year and whose need for financial aid is such that the usual sources of assistance are not sufficient.  Preference will be given to students with family responsibilities and whose permanent residence is outside Greater Victoria.

Joyce and Bill Dunning Bursary in Social Work*

Roy and Marguerite Watson Bursary in Social Work*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are single parents in the School of Social Work.

Sandra MacDonald-Dohm Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1 

A bursary of $500 is awarded to a mature woman undergraduate student in the Social Work Program. Preference is for a single parent.

Trudy Usher Bursary*

William Wiilbert Ingot Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the School of Social Work.

Win Self-Sufficiency Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to Canadian-born Indigenous students in the School of Social Work who identify as women, trans, non-binary or Two Spirit.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Irene Cohen Scholarship

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,500 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who is either continuing or transferring from a BC College into their third year in the School of Social Work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Anna Isabelle Allen Undergraduate Scholarship in Social Work*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering, continuing or transferring into the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to students with an interest in child welfare in the Province of British Columbia.

First disbursement September 2023.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Reference, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Anita Allardice Lancaster Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a full time student who is entering year four in the School of Social Work. Academic standing and participation in university or community affairs will be considered.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

British Columbia Association of Social Workers Prize

Value: $250 | Number: 1

A prize of $250 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who has completed the first year of the program in the School of Social Work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Certificate of Outstanding Academic Distinction in Human and Social Development*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A certificate of distinction and a prize of at least $1000 is awarded to the student with the highest graduating grade point average in the Faculty of Human and Social Development registered for the BA, BCYC, BSc, BSN or BSW degree.

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering fourth year in the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to a student who has a special interest in child and family welfare and/or early childhood prevention programs.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Robert S. Evans Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who intend to continue their studies at the 番茄社区 as follows:

  1. One scholarship to a student in each of the programs: Child and Youth Care, Nursing and Social Work, on the recommendation of the respective Directors;

  2. One scholarship to a student who has completed the qualifying 300-level courses for an Honours or Major program in Astronomy;

  3. Two scholarships for award within the student body at large. If no suitable candidates can be found in categories (1) or (2), additional awards can be made in category (3).

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the School of Social Work; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Anna Isabelle Allen Undergraduate Scholarship in Social Work*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering, continuing or transferring into the School of Social Work. Preference will be given to students with an interest in child welfare in the Province of British Columbia.

First disbursement September 2023.

Cindy Player Award on Equity and Human Rights

One or more awards are given in alternate years to undergraduate students continuing into third or fourth year in the Faculty of Social Sciences or the School of Social Work who:

  1. have demonstrated financial need, and
  2. are pursuing studies related to the subject of equity and human rights, and
  3. are members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to:
  • First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and all other Indigenous peoples;
  • members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs or place of origin;
  • persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities;
  • persons who identify as women; and
  • persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Applicants must submit a letter outlining how their studies have or will relate to the subject of equity and human rights. Preference is for students who have worked or volunteered with a community service organization (such as transition houses, crisis centres or friendship centres).  Applicants wanting to demonstrate they have worked or volunteered with a community service organization must include a statement (maximum 300 words) describing their paid or volunteer work. The award is given on a rotating basis, beginning with Faculty of Social Sciences.

Part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible for this Award. Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Faculty of Social Sciences or the School of Social Work.

Joyce Bewley Undergraduate Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the School of Social Work who have demonstrated financial need and have demonstrated resilience to overcome personal challenges. Preference is for students who meet one or more of these criteria, in the following order of priority:
1. are mature students (aged 30 and over) or
2. are single parents or have family responsibilities or
3. have indicated interest in a social work career in community activation, mental health, family law or dealing with family violence.

Applicants must submit a personal statement (max 500 words) describing how they have demonstrated resilience to overcome personal challenges.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senae Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Phil Petersen Scholarship in Social Work

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding 3rd or 4th year undergraduate Indigenous student in the School of Social Work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.

Roberta Taylor Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in the School of Social Work who is participating in either on-campus or distance education programs. Preference will be given to a mature student returning to school with a young family.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.
