Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Ada and Robert Le Grys Memorial Bursary in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology*

A bursary is awarded annually, on the basis of financial need and academic performance, to a student participating in a major or honours program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology which bears on human conditions - with special emphasis on human nutritional requirements and related subjects.

Chaney Fund*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students entering their fourth year in the Department of Chemistry. These students must have completed their third year at the 番茄社区.

Criswick Bursaries in Astronomy*

Dr. Ed Ishiguro - Oak Bay Kiwanis Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Dr. Ernst von Rudloff Bursary in Biochemistry*

An award is made annually to a student beginning year 3 or 4 of a major or honours program in Biochemistry. The award is open to all students in this program, especially those interested in plant biochemistry. The award will be based on academic standing and financial need.

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering fourth year in a biology program and who are planning to undertake further study in Forest Biology.

Dr. Michael Bigg Memorial Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a student enrolled in Marine Biology courses. Preference will be given to students interested in killer whale and other marine mammal conservation and research, and the effect of pollution on marine environment, and to former students of Cowichan Senior Secondary School, Duncan, BC, specializing in these fields of study.

Edward Hammond King Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Science, with preference for students in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

F.W. Benton Memorial Bursary*

An award will be made to a 4th year or graduate student in the biological sciences with a special interest in salmonids or marine environmental studies and who is studying or doing research at the Bamfield Marine Station. This bursary is given to assist in the continuance of F.W. Benton's work in wilderness preservation.

Gerald G. Few Graduate Bursary in Forest Biology*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the biological sciences with a commitment to the field of Forest Biology. Selection of the recipient(s) will be made by Student Financial Aid Services upon the recommendation of the Forest Biology Program Committee.

Gerhart B. Friedmann Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to students entering year 2 or 3 of an Honours or Major program in the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

An award is made annually to a student entering year 4 of a biology honours or major program, who has a good academic standing and is in financial need.

Howard English Victoria Fish and Game Bursary*

The Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association will present a bursary annually to a student entering 4th year in Biological Sciences who shows demonstrated interest in conservation, especially as applied to aquatic ecology (biology). If funds permit, a second award will be given.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Bursary in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology*

Two awards are made annually, on the basis of financial need and academic performance, to students participating in majors or honours programs in biochemistry and/or microbiology which bear on the human conditions (1) such as respiratory diseases ... particularly asthma, bronchial asthma, etc. and (2) with special emphasis on the body's immune system and allergic reactions.

Jane Seaborne Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to female students in a major or honours program in Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Bursary*

Two or more bursaries are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science who have declared a major in Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada.

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student entering the 番茄社区 from a Canadian secondary school who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science.

Deanna Carter Biochemistry Scholarship

A scholarship of at least $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate woman student who is entering the Faculty of Science directly from a Canadian secondary school. Preference will be given first to a student entering Biochemistry and second to a student entering Chemistry.

Emma Machado Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student continuing or transferring into the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences in the Faculty of Science.

Faculty of Science Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students entering the 番茄社区 from a Canadian secondary school who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Active Earth Engineering Award for Indigenous Students in STEM

One award is given to an entering, continuing or transferring Indigenous undergraduate student in either the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science or the Faculty of Science
who have a strong interest in pursuing studies in Science(s), Technology, Engineering, and/or Math (STEM). The student must have demonstrated community involvement and must submit a letter of reference (maximum 400 words) outlining their leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: community involvement, leadership, academic performance, athletics, innovation and creativity. Community can include schools, neighbourhoods, teams and/or Nations.

Preference will be given in the following order:

  1. members of the Songhees Nation or Esquimalt Nation
  2. members of nations governed by the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council
  3. members of Pauquachin, Malahat, T’Sou-ke and Sc’ianew First Nations
  4. students from any First Nation on Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland
  5. Indigenous students from any region in Canada

The award will be given on a rotating basis, beginning with the Faculty of Science. If there is no eligible candidate in the designated faculty, an eligible candidate from the other faculty
may be nominated.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science or the Faculty of Science.

Dean of Science Entrance Scholarship for Indigenous Students*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Science directly from a Canadian secondary school.

Grad Class of 1964 Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Science directly from a Canadian secondary school or college. Students must demonstrate a high level of extra-curricular involvement in their school community.

Greg and Tanya Kuhn International Student Award

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students who have demonstrated financial need. First preference is for students in the Faculty of Humanities, second preference is for students in the Faculty of Science.

Hargrove Award for Science and Service

One or more awards are given to undergraduate women students entering, transferring or continuing into the Faculty of Science who have volunteered with marginalized populations including, but not limited to, low income, street involved, people experiencing mental health related issues, LGBTQ+. Applicants must submit a letter of reference from a supervisor at the volunteer agency (who is not related to the applicant) that demonstrates leadership skills, team work and compassion. Preference is for students entering second year.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Jack Howard Jackson Memorial Award

One or more awards are given to entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate Indigenous students with Canadian citizenship who have demonstrated financial need and who are enrolled in any of the following: the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, School of Nursing, School of Health Information Science or the Department of Psychology.

 

Lloyd Milburn Undergraduate Scholarship

One or more scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate students with a physical disability in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Science or the School of Nursing.  Preference will be given to students who are entering UVic from a Vancouver Island high school.

Norah and Calvin Banks Indigenous Science Scholarship*

An entrance scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous student in the Faculty of Science.

Peninsula Co-op Sus Tabata Entrance Award

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering who has contributed to their community and/or school in an outstanding way through volunteer or extra-curricular activities. The recipient must be a Peninsula Co-op member or the immediate family of a member. Immediate family of the student includes parents, step-parents, guardians, siblings, grandparents, uncles and aunts. Students and immediate family must have had active membership prior to September 1st of the previous year and must currently be in good standing with Peninsula Co-op. The recipient must be enrolled full-time at UVic and must attend UVic within the same year as their secondary school graduation.

Thundercat Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Preference will be given in the following priority:

  1. Students who self-identify as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour (BIPOC)
  2. Students with demonstrated financial need

Disbursal of the awards will alternate years between the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Trussell Undergraduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (Faculty of Science)

One or more scholarships totalling $2,750 are awarded to academically outstanding entrance, transfer or in-course undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have graduated from a secondary school in the Kootenay-Boundary area of British Columbia (School Districts #5, 6, 8, 10, 20 and 51).

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Wuitchik Family Marine Sciences Undergraduate Award

One or more awards of $2,000 each are given to entering or continuing undergraduate students from underrepresented minorities in the Faculty of Science who have demonstrated an interest in marine sciences through course work, co-op or work experience. Preference will be given to students doing, or planning to do, marine sciences field work.

Students must submit a letter of application (max 300 words) explaining their passion for marine sciences and the opportunities this award would allow them to pursue.

If no applicants meet these criteria, the Award will be given to student(s) from underrepresented minorities in the Faculty of Science. A student may only receive this award once.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Y.P. Heung Foundation Post-Secondary Scholarship

Value: $5,000 | Number: 5

Five scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Social Sciences at the 番茄社区 who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need and/or are actively involved in community service. Applicants wanting to demonstrate community involvement must submit a letter of support (max 350 words) outlining their community service from a community group or a secondary school teacher or adviser. Preference is for at least one recipient to be a Canadian-born Indigenous student.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Reference, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Academic Excellence Scholarship*

Up to three one-time scholarships of equal value will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering second year in the Faculty of Science and who are Canadian citizens.

Agamemnon Kasapi and Family Scholarship*

Value: $25,000 | Number: 1

One scholarship of $25,000 or more will be awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student with the highest GPA in any program in the Faculty of Science at UVic entering second year in the Faculty of Science and is a Canadian citizen. In the case of equally qualified candidates, the student with the highest mark in their first-year calculus course (Math 100 or Math 109) will be selected. If candidates are still equally qualified, the student who achieved the highest GPA while taking the greatest number of units will be selected. Payment of the scholarship will be made in two equal installments, half in Term 1 and half in Term 2 of the Winter Session.

The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of the student’s full-time study in a program in the Faculty of Science until the completion of a first undergraduate degree or for a maximum of two renewals, whichever is the shorter period. To be automatically renewed, a student must have completed a minimum of 12 or more graded units in any two terms of study between May and April and maintained a grade point average of 7.50/9.00 or higher on the best 12 units. A student whose grade point average falls below 7.50/9.00 may file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to seek special consideration for the renewal of the scholarship.

Students registered in a co-op or work experience work-term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12 or more graded units in two terms, provided they have a grade point average of 7.50/9.00 or higher in two terms. Any student who takes neither a co-op, work-experience workterm, nor graded units for more than one term will forfeit their scholarship.

Alumni Association Science Scholarship*

Boehm Family Award for Excellence in Science*

One or more students in the honours program in the Faculty of Science will be awarded the Boehm Family Award for Excellence in Science. The successful students will be selected through an adjudication process established by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Science. Part-time students (a minimum of 1.5 units) are eligible for this award.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

B.W. Pearse Science Scholarship*

Four scholarships are awarded to third or fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Dr. Chi Shing (CS) Wong Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students with 3rd and 4th year standing in the Faculty of Science with a major focus in oceanography.  Selection will be based on overall GPA and registration in an Honours or Directed Studies project related to experimental or field-based research in ocean science.  If no student is eligible, the scholarship may be awarded to a student registered in the Ocean Sciences Minor program.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Emma Machado Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student continuing or transferring into the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences in the Faculty of Science.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Edward "Teddy" Blenkinsop Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering third or fourth year in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering.  Preference is for students with demonstrated financial need.  The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is not receiving any other scholarships.

F. W. Benton Memorial Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have a special interest in salmonids or marine environmental studies. This award is to assist with the cost of attending the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre for the purpose of research or course work.

Approval of the recipient(s) is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Greg and Tanya Kuhn International Student Award

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students who have demonstrated financial need. First preference is for students in the Faculty of Humanities, second preference is for students in the Faculty of Science.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Scholarship*

Two scholarships are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science, with a declared major in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada. Students should submit a letter or resume as part of their application in which they describe their contributions to such volunteer/youth organizations.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Norah and Calvin Banks Indigenous Leadership Award in the Sciences*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate Indigenous students in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science or School of Environmental Studies.

Graduate students must apply via the online graduate scholarship application between July 1st and September 15th. Undergraduate students must apply via the online application by May 31st.

Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon recommendation of the Director of the Office of Indigenous Affairs in consultation with the Dean of Faculty of Sciences, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and the Director of the School of Environmental Studies.

Rob and Tammy Lipson Research Scholarship*

Value: at least $2,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships, of at least $2,000 and to a maximum of $4,000 each, are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Science who have:

a) An international research opportunity. The opportunity needs to be a research collaboration between UVic and an international academic, industry or government research entity;
b) Been recommended by their advisor and/or department chair; and,
c) Whose advisor/chair and international collaborator have both committed funding to the student’s research opportunity.

Applicants must:

a) Fill out a form that itemizes the cost of the trip and verifies other levels of support; and
b) Provide a letter of support from the advisor and/or department chair.

Preference will be given to students, with first preference to undergraduates, who have demonstrated a commitment to knowledge translation through one of:

a) A presentation at a departmental or research centre symposium or colloquium;
b) Participation in a faculty/UVic wide presentation event, such as HonoursFest or IdeasFest.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science. 

The application forms are available from the Science Dean's Office and are to be submitted by April 30th. The entire budget must not be allocated to one student and the amount of the award(s) should be around the same as the amount of funding that has been committed by the department chair and international collaborator.

SMONE膯 Natural Sciences Scholarship

Value: $2,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $2,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science.  Preference will be given to an Indigenous student from nations whose territory is fully or in part located within the borders of Canada. Students may receive this award more than once.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Thomas Henry (Harry) and Doris Collom Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students continuing in the Faculty of Science or the School of Music who have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship will be disbursed on a rotating basis, beginning with the Faculty of Science. First preference will be given to students born in British Columbia and second preference to students born in the United Kingdom.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Faculty of Science or the School of Music.

Trussell Undergraduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (Faculty of Science)

One or more scholarships totalling $2,750 are awarded to academically outstanding entrance, transfer or in-course undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have graduated from a secondary school in the Kootenay-Boundary area of British Columbia (School Districts #5, 6, 8, 10, 20 and 51).

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

W.R. (Bill) Gordon Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate third or fourth year students in a Major or Honours program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering, with preference being given to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students must have made a significant contribution to one or more aspects of university life through involvement in areas such as student athletic programs, student affairs or service on university bodies or committees.

Applications must be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office via their online application by May 31st and must be accompanied by a letter or resume describing their contributions.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on behalf of the Faculty of Science.

Wuitchik Family Marine Sciences Undergraduate Award

One or more awards of $2,000 each are given to entering or continuing undergraduate students from underrepresented minorities in the Faculty of Science who have demonstrated an interest in marine sciences through course work, co-op or work experience. Preference will be given to students doing, or planning to do, marine sciences field work.

Students must submit a letter of application (max 300 words) explaining their passion for marine sciences and the opportunities this award would allow them to pursue.

If no applicants meet these criteria, the Award will be given to student(s) from underrepresented minorities in the Faculty of Science. A student may only receive this award once.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon recommendation of the Faculty of Science.
