Faculty of Human and Social Development Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Emergency Fund for Social Work Students

Value: Up to $200 | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries, to a maximum value of $200 each, are awarded to undergraduate students in the School of Social Work.  The bursary is intended to offer students one-time financial assistance in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the 番茄社区.

Faculty of Human and Social Development Indigenous Student Emergency Fund

Value: Up to $700 | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries, with a maximum value of $700 each per year, are awarded to Indigenous students (First Nations status or non-status, Inuit, Métis) enrolled in the Faculty of Human and Social Development in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the 番茄社区.

The funding is intended to assist with financial emergencies including, but not limited to:

  • medical, optical, or dental expenses
  • family crisis, community obligations, or cultural commitments and responsibilities
  • unanticipated expenses that are beyond the student's control and that directly impact their ability to complete the term.

Applicants are advised to contact the Faculty of Human and Social Development Indigenous Student Support Centre.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

50th Anniversary Human and Social Development Entrance Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to an academically outstanding student entering the 番茄社区 from a Canadian secondary school who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Faculty of Human and Social Development Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Nelson Family Award*

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students from sub-Saharan Africa with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved  by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Certificate of Outstanding Academic Distinction in Human and Social Development*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A certificate of distinction and a prize of a minimum of $1,000 is awarded to the student with the highest graduating grade point average in the Faculty of Human and Social Development registered for the BA, BCYC, BSc, BSN or BSW degree. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Faculty of Human and Social Development; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

All Our Relations Award*

One or more awards are given to Indigenous, Métis or Inuit undergraduate students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development entering the final year of their undergraduate program who demonstrate meaningful contributions to the well-being and resurgence of Indigenous Peoples during their academic program. These contributions may occur during community service with a particular First Nation or with Indigenous, Métis or Inuit peoples in an urban setting, or during fieldwork, co-op, practica, community-engaged research, or other experiential learning.

Applicants must provide a letter outlining a) their reasons for taking their chosen HSD program, and b) their connections with and contributions to the well-being and resurgence of Indigenous Peoples during the course of their academic program. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

The awards will rotate from year to year, in this order, between the following HSD Schools: Public Administration, Nursing, Public Health & Social Policy, Social Work, Health and Information Science and Child and Youth Care.

Birdwood Fund Award*

One or more awards are given to Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development or the Faculty of Social Sciences who have demonstrated financial need. The award will be given on a rotating basis, beginning with the Faculty of Human and Social Development. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Faculty of Human and Social Development or the Faculty of Social Sciences.

CFUW Victoria Doreen Sutherland Indigenous Scholarship in Faculty of HSD*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous women students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.  

Mark Krasnick Leadership Award*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more awards are given to third or fourth year First Nations students in the Faculty of Human & Social Development, the Faculty of Law or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, who demonstrates leadership in either the First Nations community or within the Faculty. Preference will be given to a British Columbia resident.

Roberta Evelyn Milnes Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development who volunteer in the community. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Nominations will be made by the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Tolmie-Wood Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development. At least one scholarship will be a minimum of $1,000. Students must complete the online application which is available April 1 to May 31 each year, and submit a letter outlining their contributions to their community and/or involvement with Indigenous art including music.
