Greek and Roman Studies Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by following these instructions. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Dennis and Evelyn Kershaw Bursary in Greek and Roman Studies*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Dr. Wilma Elias Greek and Roman Studies Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering third or fourth year or graduate students in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies. Approval of the recipients will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Butterfield Law Prize

Value: $100 | Number: 1

A prize of $100 is awarded to a student in recognition of effort and perseverance in Greek and Roman Studies subject(s).

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Catriona Cameron Bingham Prize*

Value: Prize | Number: 1

A prize in memory of Catriona Cameron Bingham is awarded to an outstanding student in a beginning course in classical Greek. Preference will normally be given to a mature student.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Classical Association of Vancouver Island Book Prize

Three or more prizes are awarded by the Classical Association of Vancouver Island for excellence in the study of Greek and Roman Studies.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Edward B. Paul Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in Greek and Roman Studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

George P. Black Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in Greek and Roman Studies, in memory of George P. Black, who was for 22 years an exceptional teacher of Latin and Greek at Victoria College.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Hector and Carol McDonald Scholarship in Greek and Roman Studies*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding 4th year undergraduate students in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Irene Lee Book Prize in Latin*

Value: Book| Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to the leading student in second year Latin. The prize is established by Gary Hayman in recognition of Irene Lee, his inspiring teacher of Latin at Mount Douglas Secondary School.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

John Peter Oleson Scholarship in Greek and Roman Studies*

One or more scholarships are awarded to a third or fourth year undergraduate student or to a graduate student in Greek and Roman Studies.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Peter L. Smith Scholarship in Greek and Roman Studies*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students with an outstanding record in courses offered by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies and who have registered for further courses in that department.

This scholarship is established in recognition of Peter L. Smith who, for 38 years, was a renowned and devoted teacher of Classics at Victoria College and later at the 番茄社区.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Richard Serle Dundas Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student who has completed year 3 in Greek and/or Latin studies in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Greek and Roman Studies; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Hannah Madgen Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who is enthusiastically pursuing a Major or Honours program in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.
