Computer Science Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Albert Loucks Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to graduate students in each of the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Physics and the Faculty of Engineering.

Ian H. Perrigo Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of Computer Science.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Afghan Women in Engineering and Computer Science Entrance Scholarship

An entrance scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate woman student entering the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science who is from Afghanistan.  Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Jacob Kerr Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering the Department of Computer Science directly from a Canadian secondary school who has demonstrated financial need.

Reliable Controls Award in Computer Science*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the Department of Computer Science. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Gwen Lock Scholarship for Women

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding woman undergraduate student entering or continuing to study Engineering or Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering.

 

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Computer Science; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Bit Quill Technologies Scholarship for Women in Computer Science and Software Engineering*

Three scholarships, of at least $1,000 each, are awarded to undergraduate women students who are entering second, third or fourth year in the Bachelor of Science Major or Honours program in Computer Science or the Bachelor of Software Engineering program. Applications for the scholarship should reference volunteer service in the community and/or demonstrated leadership in or outside of the classroom.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering.

Applicants must complete the online application by May 31.

Ian and Sheila Barrodale Award in Computer Science and Mathematics

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Awards of at least $2,000 each are awarded to one or more undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science and one or more undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who:

  • Are currently enrolled in Computer Science or Mathematics Co-operative Education or the Work Experience Program (WEP).
  • Have demonstrated (a) determination to improve their academic standing, and/or (b) initiative through involvement in extracurricular activities in the community or within their program.

Application forms are available from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and must be returned by April 30th.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Computer Science.

Jesse Short-Gershman Memorial Scholarship*

Value: $1,000| Number: 1

One scholarship of at least $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and one scholarship of at least $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics who submit a one-page essay indicating a mental health challenge they faced/are facing and what they learned/are learning through the experience. The essay should address activities that the student has participated in such as: leadership, tutoring, peer mentoring, advocacy or self-care, which demonstrate how they have worked/are working on overcoming these challenges. Students with a GPA of 6.0 or higher will normally be considered.

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the Department of Computer Science. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.

SunTracker Technologies Scholarship

Value: $1,000| Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of $1,000 or more are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate women students in Computer Science or Software Engineering who have a third or fourth year standing. Preference will be given to students who have pursued a project or work term in photorealistic lighting. Students in combined programs with Computer Science will be eligible for this award.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Computer Science.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Combined Computer Science and Mathematics Scholarship*

Value: at least $2,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering their third year of studies in either the Major: Combined Computer Science and Mathematics or the Honours: Combined Computer Science and Mathematics program who have the highest GPA in their program. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to a student pursuing the co-op option. This scholarship will not be given to the same individual more than once.

Computer Science Co-op Report Prize*

A prize is awarded to a student deemed to have submitted an outstanding work term report in a Computer Science cooperative degree program. Supported by contributors to the Computer Science 10th Anniversary Scholarship Fund.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Engineering and Computer Science Co-op office.

Department of Computer Science 10th Anniversary Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who has achieved fourth year standing in a major, honours or combined Computer Science degree program.

Gwen Lock Scholarship for Women

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding woman undergraduate student entering or continuing to study Engineering or Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering.

John Thipthorpe Memorial Award*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

An award is made to a student entering third year in an undergraduate program of Computer Science. The award is based on the student's academic achievement exhibited in the second year courses.
