Biology Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the 番茄社区 Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Dr. Ernst con Rudloff Bursary in Forest Biology*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering fourth year in a biology program and who are planning to undertake further study in Forest Biology.

Dr. Michael Bigg Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a student enrolled in Marine Biology courses. Preference will be given to students interested in killer whale or other large marine mammal conservation and research, and to former students of the Cowichan Senior Secondary School, Duncan, B.C. specialising in that field of study.

Gerald G. Few Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in the biological sciences with a commitment to the field of Forest Biology.

G. Morley Neal Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students, with good academic standing, entering fourth year of a Biology Honours or Major Program.

Goldstream Hatchery Education Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Department of Biology.

Howard English Victoria Fish and Game Bursary*

The Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association will present a bursary annually to a student entering 4th year in Biological Sciences who demonstrates interest in conservation, especially as applied to aquatic ecology (biology). If funds permit, a second award will be given.

Jane Seaborne Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to women students in a major or honours program in Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have declared a major in Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada.

Paul Parizeau Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A bursary of $500 is awarded to a graduate student doing research in marine biology with a specialty in cancer research or research on the ecosystems and their impact on marine life in and around Vancouver Island.

VNHS Samuel Simco Graduate Bursary

One or more bursaries, established by the Victoria Natural History Society from funds bequeathed for this purpose by the late Mr. Samuel Simco, are awarded to graduate students in Biology, Earth and Ocean Sciences, Environmental Studies, or Geography and who are specializing in the area of species and/or habitat conservation.

VNHS Samuel Simco Undergraduate Bursary

One or more bursaries, established by the Victoria Natural History Society from funds bequeathed for this purpose by the late Mr. Samuel Simco, are awarded to undergraduate students in Biology specializing in the area of species and/or habitat conservation.  Selection will be made by Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools. 
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Biology; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Allen P. James Scholarship*

Two scholarships, one in the Department of Biology and one in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering fourth year who have a declared Major in a program offered in those departments. Applicants are required to submit a 300-500 word statement that describes their interest in pursuing basic science research either through graduate studies and/or a career in research. Students must have demonstrated financial need. Applicants must apply through the Student Awards and Financial Aid online in-course application accessible each year between April 1 and May 31.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Del Meidinger Travel Scholarship

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

One scholarship of $1,500 is awarded annually to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in an Honours or Major program in the Department of Biology, to assist with travel costs associated with undertaking a co-op work term anywhere outside of their home community. The work term must focus on either sustainable forest management or forest ecology.

Applications must be submitted to the Co-operative Education Office (coopawards@uvic.ca) by:

  • October 15 for a co-op placement that takes place September to December,
  • February 15 for a co-op placement that takes place January to April or
  • June 15 for a co-op placement that takes place May to August.

Students may receive this award more than once.

Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

First disbursement 2023 Summer Session (May to August co-op period).

Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate women students registered in pre-medicine disciplines, for example Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have stated an intention to continue on to medical school. Approval of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate departments. Approval of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.

John Carling Fraser Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 2

Two scholarships are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science, with a declared major in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada. Students should submit a letter or resume as part of their application in which they describe their contributions to such volunteer/youth organizations.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

Joyce Clearihue Scholarship in Forest Biology*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in 3rd or 4th year of a major or honours program in the Department of Biology who have a special interest in Forest Biology. Applicants should submit a 300 word statement that describes their academic program, experience, or interest in Forest Biology.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Biology.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Amelia Leith Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who is completing year 2 or 3 of a major or honours program in Biology and who has an interest in horticultural studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

B.W. Pearse Science Scholarship*

Four scholarships are awarded to third and fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Chapman Memorial Scholarship*

Two scholarships are awarded, one to a student who has completed third year Biology, on the Ecology Program, and one to a student who has completed third year Geography, on the Resources and Physical Program. A book on ecology and conservation, selected by the appropriate department, is part of the award. These scholarships are given in memory of John Chapman and his daughter Barbara who were well known conservationists.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology and Geography.

Charles Guiguet Book Prize*

A book prize is awarded to a fourth year student with a special interest in zoology.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Eric Ashby Memorial Prize in Biology*

A prize is awarded to a student in a major or honours program in Biology who has completed second year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Frances Oldham Kelsey Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Biology or the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

Harper Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in Science with a strong preference for students with a demonstrated commitment to Marine Biology.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Ian and Joyce McTaggart-Cowan Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of an Honours program in Biology.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

John J. Dobrocky Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering fourth year who is specializing in any aspect of oceanography or related marine sciences and who has demonstrated outstanding potential for a professional career in the discipline.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Maud Leveson-Gower Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of Biology with the highest grade in courses which include the study of conchology or malacology.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Melburn-Brenton Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student, with high standing, whose special interest is cryptogamic botany.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Sheila Calvert Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering the third or fourth year in Biology.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Sinclair Farris Award*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more award(s) of at least $400 are made to undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Biology for interest and achievement of excellence in the field of microtechnique. The award was established to recognize Sinclair Farris who worked with the Canadian Forestry Service (Environment Canada) for 38 years, specializing in microtechnique.

Approval is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology in the case of an undergraduate student and by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the case of a graduate student.

St. Martin Family Biology Scholarship

Value: $2,500 | Number: 1

One scholarship will be awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering second year with the highest GPA in the Department of Biology and who:

  • completed at least 15.0 units in their first year and
  • did not receive a UVic scholarship in their first year at UVic.

In the case of equally qualified candidates, the student with the highest mark in their first-year Biology 184/186 course will be selected.

Thetis Park Nature Sanctuary Association Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student, with high standing, whose main interest is plant taxonomy. 

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

Victoria Rhododendron Society Pioneer Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a third or fourth year student in Biology whose main interest is Plant Sciences.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

VNHS Bev Glover Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering third or fourth year in a major or honours program in the Department of Biology or the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences who is specializing in the area of species or habitat conservation. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

VNHS Dennis and Lyndis Davis Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Biology, or the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Preference will be given to students pursuing studies in species, habitat or ecosystem conservation, ecology or biodiversity. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Science.

VNHS Freeman F. King Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering fourth year in the Department of Biology and preparing for a career in natural history. Preference is given to a students with an interest in field studies, especially those with a focus on the conservation of terrestrial and/or marine biodiversity. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.
