Performance (MMus)
Our performance program blends hands-on experience and experiential education in a collaborative environment. You’ll receive personalized training and performance-centred experience in solo, chamber and large ensemble settings. You’ll attend seminar classes on music theory, history and style.
This program serves as a gateway to a professional life in music (e.g. building private teaching studios, undertaking professional auditions and engagements with professional orchestras or other ensembles, etc.) and as an academic pathway to further specialized research at the DMA/PhD level.

Outcomes
Students in this program will:
- develop heightened tonal control and variety, allowing for greater expressive capacities
- hone technical expertise and further develop the technical tools that allow for greater mastery of musical expression
- develop advanced musicianship skills through experiential performance-based learning (often in collaborative settings, but also on an individual basis)
- develop greater understanding, literacy and awareness of repertoire relating to specialised area of study (voice, piano, flute, etc.)
- develop skills for live performance challenges, including developing greater stage presence and practical strategies for managing performance anxiety
- learn about the role, ethics and responsibilities of becoming a professional performing musician

All graduate students in this program must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:
- you must list a potential supervisor on your application
- this faculty member must agree to be your supervisor and recommend your admission

As part of your application, you must submit:
- a one- to two-page statement outlining your background, your goals as a musician and/or scholar and your reasons for wishing to pursue your graduate degree at UVic
Audition
We encourage you to audition in person. Your audition repertoire should:
- reflect a level of difficulty and variety appropriate for a graduate program
- be at least 30 minutes long
Contact the graduate advisor at musigrad@uvic.ca to discuss appropriate audition repertoire and to book an audition.
If you can’t audition in person, you may submit a high-quality, unedited CD recording of your audition. We encourage you to also send a video tape or DVD. Please note that some instructors may require a live audition for acceptance to their class.
