Level 2 of the NCIL

The driving idea behind the floor plan of the expansion is to create pathway that flows from the existing Fraser Building to the new NCIL.  You will find that this path is akin to ‘a walk in the forest,’ with the design theme being a building that is simply an interior-based alternative to reach the exterior woods.  This design is will ensure that a connection is established between guests and the surrounding environment, while establishing a flow that incorporates new and old structures.

The first floor will form the bulk of the expansion with new space provided for classrooms, social spaces and offices.  Some notable spaces include:

  • The double storey atrium, an artery that connects the new building with the old. The atrium will intertwine the new structure while providing generous views of the exterior environment.
  • The Large ceremony, a room formed in the shape of a traditional Coast Salish canoe meant to facilitate gatherings.
  • The learning deck, a platform overlooking the forest to the south.
  • An Indigenous support suite, fitted with offices for support staff and a small ceremony room for gathering.

The second floor will exist primarily to the south end of the structure and will add more space for learning, collaboration and research.  Some points of interest about the second floor include:

  • The sky classroom, a room in which you will find views directed towards the woods and a skylight to provide views of the stars at night.
  • Office space for the new Indigenous Law research Unit (ILRU), the Environmental Law Centre (ELC) and the Indigenous Law Student Association (ILSA).
