Background

Ehime University, Matsuyama, Japan

CAPI will be offering two internship placements with Ehime University, from May to August 2025 and September to December 2025.

Position description:

Interns at Ehime University will conduct research on disaster education and mitigation in Japan under the guidance of a graduate professor. You will participate in lectures and workshops centred on natural disaster awareness, and travel to different regions for on-site assessments, studying major historical earthquakes and tsunamis. This position provides the opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture while contributing to local disaster preparedness efforts and gaining valuable international work experience.

Requirements/Skills an Intern would benefit from having:

  • Intermediate Japanese proficiency
  • Ability to develop professional presentations using Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating confidence in working with communities in a collaborative environment
  • A strong desire to integrate and immerse oneself in Japanese culture
  • Adaptability to changing environments and cross-cultural collaboration
  • An interest in urban and development issues in the Asia-Pacific region

Eligibility

Applicants to CAPI's internship program must meet the following basic eligibility criteria:

  • you must be a current, full-time UVic student (upper level undergraduate or graduate student).
  • you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • you must be committed to completing all requirements of the program including an in-depth face to face pre-departure orientation organized by CAPI, securing visas/work/entry permits as required by the host country, all reporting as required by CAPI.
  • you must be available to complete the specified overseas placement from May to August or September to December.
Prospective interns should have:
    • basic fluency in Japanese is considered an asset
    • an interest in urban and development issues in the Asia-Pacific region
    • the ability to adapt to different cultures and environments

Funding

Interns will be offered $8,500 CAD to cover a return, international air travel from Victoria to Japan, and living expenses while in placement (local travel, rent, utilities, food, etc.). Students who are not already covered through UVic or another insurance carrier will be responsible for purchasing travel insurance for 4 months. Students will be also be responsible for tuition and course fees.
