What FGS does for you
The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) helps graduate students navigate through funding opportunities, program requirements and available academic accommodations.
Funding
Every year, UVic awards $12 million to help fund graduate students through a combination of:
- UVic scholarships and awards
- teaching and research assistantships
- international activities and travel grants
FGS helps graduate students apply for these opportunities, as well as external scholarships, awards and bursaries.
INTD student support
We provide support to graduate students enrolled in an individual interdisciplinary (INTD) specialized degree program. An INTD program lets you create your own academic program by combining interests in different fields of study.
Working with co-supervisors in at least two different academic units, you'll follow an individual program tailored to your own interests. You'll design your program in consultation with your supervisory committee.
Another option is for you to take interdisciplinary studies in an existing program with an interdisciplinary nature.
Academic concessions & accommodations
We work with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) to support students with disabilities. They help provide accommodations for students and ensure an equitable, inclusive and usable education.
FGS also helps students who are affected by illness, an accident or family matters. In these cases, you may apply for a deferral of a course grade. You can also apply for:
- withdrawal from the course due to extenuating circumstances
- a drop of course(s) without academic and/or fee penalty
- a leave of absence from the program
Additional graduate supports
We also help graduate students with:
- program extensions and candidacy exam extensions
- supervisory relationships
- requests for oral examinations (thesis and dissertation)
- approval of external examiners (for PhD students)
- graduate policies and procedures
