The implementation of solar panels on the HBRSL

The massing of the ECSE keeps the laboratory spaces on the lower levels for easier access while keeping computational research, grad spaces and faculty offices on the top floors to maximize natural light.

  • The ECSE takes a terraced form that allows for better natural light to the top floors and features such as an outdoor roof with added green space.
  • The atrium is extended to create a new social hub while being directed towards Cunningham woods via the west entrance to establish a connection to the surrounding woods.
  • The massing of HBRSL allows for a works yard to the east of the building and is structured to minimize impact to the surrounding ecosystems and neighboring engineering buildings.
  • The terraced form of the ECSE and the rectangular volume of the HBRSL makes both structures ideal for photovoltaic solar panelling to further reduce the ecological footprint of the engineering neighborhood.
