Hands-on learning

student at museum

At UVic, you’ll learn in new and dynamic ways.

Balance your academic studies with hands-on work experience through a co-op or practicum. Travel overseas on an international exchange or embark on a field school with students from around the world.

The World University Rankings named us the top comprehensive university in Canada for graduate employability—our hands-on learning programs have a lot to do with that. You’ll graduate with experience working with experts in your field.

Community service learning

UVic is more than just academics. As a UVic student you are a part of a dynamic, diverse and engaged community who cares about the world as much as you do.

Don’t miss out on hands-on learning opportunities. You could organize food drives for the homeless, volunteer for a local non-profit or stand up for a cause you believe in. You'll push boundaries to solve real-world problems, and learn how to step outside of your comfort zone.

Co-operative education

Build your career while you study. 62% of co-operative education (co-op) students at UVic get job offers before they graduate.

Through co-op, you can alternate terms in class with paid co-op work terms in jobs related to your field of study. You’ll try different jobs, earn a salary, meet employers and gain relevant experience – all during your UVic degree!

Exchange programs

Combine your passion for travel with your education by applying for an exchange program.

Immerse yourself in another culture, gain a different perspective on the world and the skills to be a great employee. You can do all of this while earning credit toward your degree at any of our 65 partner universities across 23 countries.

Field schools

Field schools take you out of the classroom to conduct hands-on study and research in locations across Canada and around the world.

You'll travel with a small group of students from UVic and other BC post-secondary institutions, working as a team under the guidance of a UVic faculty member.

Practicums

Practicums give you the chance to put theory into practice. You’ll practice skills under the supervision of experienced professionals in your field of study. You’ll also broaden your understanding of policy, practice, therapeutic work and community development.

Explore our undergraduate programs to find ones that require practicums.

Research opportunities

As an undergraduate student, you’ll find lots of ways to get involved with research.

In an honours program, you can round out your degree with an independent research project under the close supervision of our faculty. You’ll have an opportunity to apply for an honours program after your second year at UVic.

Our annual  (JCURA) give you an opportunity to conduct research under the guidance and mentorship of UVic professors. Apply and you could receive $1,500 toward your studies.
