Eligibility for subsidized interlibrary loan services
These UVic borrowers are eligible to use interlibrary loan:
- Undergraduate students (see limitations for undergraduates)
- Graduate students
- Faculty and retired faculty
- Staff
- Affiliates
Limitations for undergraduates
Materials for undergraduate students will be obtained from Canadian libraries only. Exceptions may be made if your professor is willing to sign a letter of permission.
Other categories of library users
UVic alumni and community borrowers are not eligible for subsidized interlibrary loan services. However, you may obtain interlibrary loan materials for a fee through the Distance Learning and Research office. A current schedule of charges is available.

Materials available through interlibrary loan
- Books
- Journal articles/newspaper articles (see copyright information)
- Microforms
- Government documents and conference proceedings
- Theses and dissertations
- Items officially missing from the UVic Libraries
- Different edition of a book held by the UVic Libraries
Materials not available through interlibrary loan
- Videos and films
- Materials already in the UVic Libraries regardless of format
- Materials on reserve
- Reference books
- Entire issues of journals (copyright information)
- Materials in high use in the lending library
- Rare and fragile items
- Materials that are difficult and/or expensive to ship
- Sound recordings
Restrictions on interlibrary loans
- Requests are usually restricted to items required for research, UVic employment, thesis/dissertation, or course work.
- Eligible borrowers may not make requests on behalf of ineligible borrowers.
