Fines

**As of September 3rd, 2024, UVic Libraries will no longer be assessing overdue fines for regular loans.**

Recalled items, Interlibrary loans, media equipment, and short term loans (such as Reserve items) are still subject to overdue fines.

Due dates may change based on renewals and recall requests. Items not returned or renewed by the due date/time are subject to overdue fines or replacement charges.

  • Borrowing is blocked when fines or charges reach $20.00 or more.
  • Borrowing privileges may be reinstated when outstanding charges are paid.

Paying your fine

Outstanding fines can be paid:

  • online by Interac, VISA or MasterCard,  (Please note that we are unable to process online payments for Community Borrowers - these patrons must settle fines at the Ask Us Desk)
  • in person by Interac, VISA, MasterCard at the Ask Us Desk
  • in person by cash or cheque at the Ask Us Desk

I have damaged or lost a borrowed item

Damaged items

Please report damaged library items to the Ask Us Desk. Staff will assess the item’s condition and borrowers may be charged a replacement cost and processing fee.

Lost and missing items

Please report lost library items to the Ask Us Desk. Borrowers will be charged a replacement cost, a processing fee, and applicable overdue fines.

I have overdue items

Items are due at the hour and/or the day noted, either as specified at the time of loan or renewal or as modified by a recall notice.

Overdue charges:

  • Regular items: No fine
  • Recalled items: $2.00 per day
  • Reserve items: $1.20 per hour
  • Interlibrary Loan items: $2.00 per day 
  • Short term laptops: $0.25 per minute
  • Extended loan laptops and DSLR cameras: $10.00 per day
  • Charging cables: $2 per day
  • All other media equipment: $5 per day

Regular items that have been overdue for 30 days or recalled items that have been overdue for 10 days will be assumed lost. A replacement cost and processing fee of $30 will be applied to the borrower’s account.

As of September 3rd, 2024, automatic renewals will be enabled for all regular loans.  The maximum renewal limit for all borrowers is 5 renewals. For Undergraduate, Graduate, Faculty, and Staff borrowers this amounts to 913 days (2.5 years). For Alumni and Community borrowers, the maximum renewal limit is 168 days (6 months).
