Faculty awards

The Faculty of Humanities offers several awards to support student research and travel in different academic areas:

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are focusing on the study of religion and are enrolled in a program offered by the Faculty of Humanities.

Deadline: May 15 

Award(s) of up to $6,000 available for undergraduate students registered in the Faculty of Humanities who are studying abroad through courses, field schools, or programs offered or recognized by the Faculty of Humanities.

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities to assist with regional, national or international travel outside of Southern Vancouver Island (defined as the area south of Nanaimo and not including any of the Gulf Islands) in relation to a UVic course in the Faculty of Humanities. Coursework can be part of an exchange, study abroad, field school or co-op placement in a program supported by a program in the Faculty. 

We actively encourage nominations of candidates from groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to: 

  • First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and all other Indigenous peoples
  • members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ethnicity, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs or place of origin
  • persons with a visible and/or invisible disability
  • women
  • persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions

The adjudication committee must consider equity and diversity when making its deliberations. All disclosures to the committee are confidential.

Applications must include: 

  1. A budget for the amount requested (maximum $1000)
  2. A statement of no more than 350 words describing the purpose of the coursework and its relevance to the student's program of study
  3. One letter of support from appropriate instructors familiar with the student's academic work

All application materials should be addressed and submitted to the Associate Dean Academic, Faculty of Humanities. Please review the Faculty of Humanities Travel and Learning Scholarship criteria before applying. Please ensure that your application includes all of the required materials.

One award of up to $6,000 for travel to Iceland for research or study purposes. Please review the Margaret and Richard Beck Student Research Travel Award criteria before applying.

Deadline: December 15 

One or more awards of up to $1,000 for undergraduate students with minimum third-year standing or to graduate students who have completed a project in a course or thesis in the Humanities that makes a significant creative or innovative contribution to humanities computing.
