How to apply for your PhD

The online application opens September 1st each year and closes December 15th for entry the following September.

 

Admission to the PhD program

You should have a MA degree in art history or a closely related field from a recognized university, and demonstrated ability to undertake advanced research. (This capability will be judged on the basis of a master's thesis or other scholarly work, including publications, as well as from letters of reference from qualified referees.)

Your PhD application check list:

  • Application form (online form can be saved and accessed again)
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts from all post-secondary institutes you have attended (you may be required to provide original transcripts in a sealed envelope from the institution at a later date should you be offered admission)
  • Two academic references: please provide names and email addresses. They will then be sent an email with a link to an online form they can either complete, or upload a letter of reference
  • *Proof of  English language proficiency
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Statement of purpose (3 pages), including a one-page summary of your proposed research, and two pages answering the following questions:
    • Why this department?
    • What skills are you planning to gain from your degree?
    • What do you want to study?
    • What experience do you have in your field of study?
    • Would you like to study or do research with a particular faculty member?
  • Sample of written art-historical research (your master’s thesis)
  • Application fee

*If English is not your first language, or was not the language of instruction for a recent degree, you will be required to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores that demonstrate English proficiency.

You must also meet all of the requirements for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Students at the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø.
