PhD candidate Atri Hatef recently received a SSHRC grant worth $20,000 per year
PhD candidate Atri Hatef was thrilled to receive a SSHRC grant to help finance her study of Islamic medieval urban architecture. “I’m looking at transcultural exchanges during 13th and 14th century Iran,” says Hatef, who came to UVic from Iran specifically to study with AHVS professor Marcus Milwright.
But, as recent events have shown, academic pursuits can easily be threatened by politics — both at home and abroad. “We’re usually looking at people who lived 700 or 800 years ago, but consider what’s happening in Syria, in Jordan, in many countries around the Middle East: we’re losing the very materials we’re supposed to be working with,” she says.
Funding available
Once we have received your complete application, you will automatically be considered for:
UVic fellowships of up to $17,500 per year (MA) and $20,000 per year (PhD)
UVic graduate awards of up to $10,000 per year (MA and PhD)
These awards are funded through the Faculty of Graduate Studies with recommendations by the department and are normally awarded to graduate students of high academic standing.
The (SSHRC) offers generous funding for both MA and PhD students who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
You may apply for teaching and/or research assistantships.
You can apply for a travel grant from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS) to support travel to conferences, workshops, or research activities.
In addition to this funding, the department is able to provide you with funding up to $200. These grants are available once per year per student.
The award is to cover travel, food and accommodation costs (the “Forum Costs”) for the recipient of the Jeffrey Rubinoff Scholar in Arts as a Source of Knowledge Fellowship and two or more undergraduate or graduate students to attend the Company of Ideas Forum (the “Forum”) which is conducted annually by the Jeffrey Rubinoff Foundation at the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park (JRSP).
Recipients will be chosen from the Department of Art History and Visual Studies. If no eligible undergraduate or graduate students are available in a given year, recipients may be chosen from the Department of Visual Arts.
Funding is available each year for 2 additional graduate students to attend the Company of Ideas Forum which is held annually in June and hosted by the Jeffrey Rubinoff Foundation at the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park on Hornby Island, BC.
A call for applications will be circulated to graduate students.

You may apply to receive $ 1,500 to support your travel and other expenses for activities in which you can expand your learning experiences and professional networks.
Funded learning experiences include:
Attendance at heritage-related courses, seminars, workshops and conferences in locations outside Canada or the student's country of residence, whether offered by the 番茄社区 or by other institutions.
An internship with an international government entity or with a heritage firm or professional (Canadian or international) working outside Canada.
Self-directed study (ie AHVS 491A) in heritage conservation in a location outside Canada or the student's country of residence.
The Williams Legacy Chair provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate student employment as Research Assistants. Students will have the opportunity to work with the Williams Legacy Chair, Dr. Carolyn Butler-Palmer. The Centre welcomes applications from UVic graduate students for one-year fellowship appointments at the Centre.
The fellowships are open to 番茄社区 graduate students whose projects fall within the Centre's research mandate. The awards are intended for students who have completed course work and will be at the writing stage of their graduate thesis or dissertation during the period of their fellowship.

Flora Hamilton Burns Fellowship Donated by Flora Hamilton Burns in memory of Emily Carr. This fellowship may be awarded to a highly-qualified student in AHVS.
Henriette Ann Schmidt Graduate Scholarship One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding graduate students from any department who are specializing in Aboriginal or Indigenous arts. Preference will be given to students studying Pre-Columbian art.
Heather J. Lindstedt and Brian A. Pollick Fellowship The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society welcomes applications from Art History and Visual Studies PhD (post-comprehensive) graduate students for one-year fellowship appointments at the centre commencing September, 2018. The student must be a Art History and Visual Studies PhD program and have completed their comprehensive exam.
