Student projects become new Antiracist resource website
October 20, 2022
Submitted by Georgia Sitara.
A new website, Antiracist History and Theory, featuring the work of UVic students was launched earlier this fall with the goal of making some of the most important scholarship on decolonization and anti-racism accessible, readable and actionable beyond the classroom.
What's on the website?
The colourful and easy to navigate website features factsheets which distill and map the argument(s) and most important points of one academic article, or in some cases, a combination of scholarly work, in one or two pages.
The factsheet highlights the key points, interpretations, and interventions made by a scholar to help us rethink and re-imagine the past and the present. Factsheets are learning and teaching tools for legislators, policy makers, administrators, professors, teachers, students, community members and aim to bring scholarship into public discussions on some of the most important issues of our time.
Project background
Each of the 100+ factsheets were created by students in the Departments of History and Gender Studies as well as Social Justice Studies, in the following courses taught by Dr. Georgia Sitara:
- HSTR392A Race, Racism and Ethnicity in Canada to 1900
- HSTR329B Race, Racism and Ethnicity in Canada Since 1900
- GNDR 332 What’s Race Got to Do with it: Theories of Race, Racism and Racialization
- SJS400A Social Justice Studies Seminar also cross listed as GNDR480
- GNDR329 Animal Rights, Feminist Theory and Social Justice
Dr. Sitara and the students involved in this project will continue to add more factsheets to the website as students complete these assignments in current and future courses.
