Artificial intelligence helps students find work

July 19, 2023

Submitted on behalf of Co-operative Education Program and Career Services.

Currently, UVic Co-op and Career Services is piloting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to help students find employment. The AI platform, VMock, provides tailored résumé and interview feedback.

The pilot project

Résumé and interview feedback is the most requested appointment type from Career Services. With only 6 career educators serving all UVic students and alumni availability is limited. However, the introduction of this AI platform will allow all students to access this critical service.

VMock’s is a great option for students hoping to gain individualized feedback on their résumés, interview skill and more. Students are now able to upload their résumé and receive on-the-spot comments about errors in formatting, language and structure that could otherwise disqualify someone from consideration for a job. VMock’s Elevator Pitch module asks for information about an upcoming interview and will generate sample interview questions and provide helpful feedback on how you answer.

“We see the introduction of VMock as a way to increase accessibility and reduce barriers to student support” stated Joy Poliquin, Senior Communications Co-op and Career Services. With basic feedback requests met by VMock, Co-op and Career staff can allocate their time to providing more individualized career support to students who need it as well as drop-in career support sessions. Already more than 1,300 students have used the tool.
