Morgan Chisan (biology)

Morgan Chisan's passion for the marine environment came to life during her work term as a marine experiential educator at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.

She was responsible for the well-being of marine invertebrates and vertebrates at BMSC, including creating appropriate habitats. In this picture, moran had just collected fronds of Macrocystis pyrifera (Giant Kelp) for a large tank holding dogfish.

Taking care of animals

I worked in animal care and education, where my responsibilities included caring for various marine vertebrates and invertebrates. This involved feeding them, monitoring their health, and creating their habitats. I also collected and returned animals that were brought to the station.

In the educational aspect of my role, I assisted in facilitating university field courses and led public tours, including teaching a lab focused on marine invertebrate diversity.

Supporting marine research

I assisted researchers and students with tasks related to their animals' well-being, contributing to high-quality data. I also enhanced the campus experience by organizing university programming and educating the public about the diverse organisms in Barkley Sound, including addressing questions about climate change.

I believe education is crucial for protecting our planet, and I had the opportunity to share my passion for the ocean with many people.

The impact of co-op

This co-op enhanced my marine biology degree by providing hands-on fieldwork experience and insights into the behind-the-scenes operations involved in educating students and the public about marine science.

I learned the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and starting each day with a good attitude. Sharing this positivity with those around you can be crucial, especially because even if you're not feeling your best, others might be having a tougher time. Uplifting those around you can make a significant difference.

A co-op is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in your field. It's not just about working for an employer; it's also a chance to learn and grow. You can discuss your goals with your employer to ensure you have opportunities to develop the skills you're seeking.
