Research software

Many softwares developed for research can be freely accessed and used for academic research. For researchers wanting to use software that costs money, we have several solutions available.

UVic software

There's a variety of software available to UVic researchers through campus site license agreements. Some titles can be used at no cost and others have discounted pricing. Commonly requested applications for research are:

Please note that each software title has its own eligibility and access requirements. Some can be installed on shared research lab computers, while others are restricted to individual devices.

Survey tools

SurveyMonkey is an online tool used to create, distribute, and analyze surveys. Key features include:

  • Survey questions and responses are stored in Canada.
  • Templates for surveys, forms, questionnaires, and polls.
  • Online and offline data collection options.
  • Reporting and analysis tools.
  • Survey data backups.

REDCap is a secure, browser-based application. You can use it to construct databases, and design and perform surveys. Key features include:

  • All REDCap data is hosted at UVic.
  • A wide variety of user controls exist for project customization.
  • Technical support provided by the RCS team.
  • REDCap training workshops open to all audiences.

Software on clusters

The Alliance clusters include an tools and packages that updates frequently.  Many users use external packages or their own code written in languages like:

  • Python
  • R

or larger research specific software like:

  • OpenFOAM
  • GROMACS
