The 2024 Geography 477 field camp is being held in the Lillooet Icefield area, British Columbia Coast Mountains, from Monday, August 26th, to Sunday, September 1st, 2024. This is a remote backcountry site and participants should anticipate variable weather conditions and long days exploring challenging terrain over the duration of the field camp. Access is by helicopter and boat charter, and participants require personal tents for accommodation.

Eligibility

We expect many more applicants than the 12 positions available. Accordingly, we list the following eligibility information:

  • Preference will be given to students in their final year of study
  • Preference may be given to students who have completed more than one of the pre-requisites
  • Preference may be given to students who identify this is a required course in their program
  • This field school is physically demanding. Applicants must mention if they have accessibility needs that may affect their ability to participate.

Courses

This field school is comprised of one course worth 1.5 UVic credits. Successful applicants will be registered in the course through special registration by the Department of Geography (students will not register themselves).

Field School Fees

For field schools, students pay regular UVic tuition plus field school fees (see below).

Field school fees can be paid by cheque, money order, counter cheque, or cash ONLY. Cheques should be made payable to the 番茄社区. Payment can be dropped off at the Geography main office (David Turpin Building room B203), or mailed (cheque only). DO NOT MAIL CASH.

Field school fees^:

  • $300 deposit paid within one week of acceptance into the field program, plus:
  • $1200 paid by July 24th, 2024*

*If the $1200 is not paid by July 24th, your spot will be given away to another student on the waitlist

^All field school fees are subject to change between program offerings. 

 Field school fees include:                      

  • Group meals (Aug 26 - Sept 1)
  • Transportation costs from Campbell River (including helicopter and boat charter)

Field school fees do not include:

  • Tuition
  • Transportation expenses to/from Campbell River
  • Other expenses such any personal gear (e.g. tent, hiking shoes, clothing etc.) required for the course**

Financial Support

This field school has been directly subsidized by the Faculty of Social Sciences Field School Support Fund. No application is necessary to receive this support, as it has already been built into the field school fees. In addition to the above fund, the 番茄社区 Geography Department is also subsidizing this unique learning experience.
