Giving to Geography

Giving is priceless. Make an impact by supporting student learning in Geography!

Geography is an integrative, environmental discipline that at its core asks how we impact, and are impacted by, the natural world. Our students are constantly learning beyond the classroom in hands-on programs that explore new intersections of human and environmental knowledge.

Giving is personal for both you, the donor, and the recipients whose lives are forever changed by your gifts. But the impact goes far beyond that. It reaches into communities, engages with diverse cultures, and creates deeper understanding of local, national, and international questions.

By giving to the department, alumni and other valued donors make life-changing educational and experiential opportunities for students possible through the support of awards, scholarships, lab  and field equipment, and more.  You can make an impact, no matter the scale.

Resources that we receive are primarily used in support of student activities, including:

  • Field courses in BC, First Nations territories and international locations

  • Events and special lectures put on by the

  • Student attendance at conferences and the regional meetings of the

  • Special projects in support of student research and community engagement, like

Donor funding supports Geography scholarships and awards

Both undergraduate and graduate students in Geography enjoy a wide variety of financial support for their studies and research.

The legacies of several highly respected geographers, including Dr. Bob Ross and Ms. Gillian Sherwin, live on in our department in the form of student scholarships and teaching awards.  Every year, the Ross Geography Scholarship creates opportunities for deserving geography students to achieve their academic goals.  The Gillian Sherwin Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes the profound impact instructors have on students' experiences and honours their commitment to excellent teaching and mentorship.

Donor funding helps students make lasting change for a healthier planet

After completing UVic’s Northern Europe Sustainability field school, Riley Thackray was keen to apply her knowledge and enthusiasm to a local project. The Stephens Family Undergraduate Research Award in Organic & Sustainable Food Systems gave her the means to expand the scope of her project from a rain catchment system to a water conservation initiative, providing lasting benefits to community partner Woodwynn Farms.
