NCA applicants

We consider a limited number of applicants with foreign law degrees who wish to fulfill requirements of the . 

Please note that we only offer upper-year (300-level) courses to NCA students at UVic Law and that NCA students are only permitted to study with us during the summer session. 

NCA applicants must have already satisfied all of the core competencies listed below (through NCA examinations or by taking courses at other law schools) before applying to UVic Law for any outstanding competencies.

Completed core competencies required to be considered for Admission to the summer session:

    • Canadian Criminal Law and Procedure
    • Canadian Constitutional Law
    • Foundations of Canadian Law
    • Contracts
    • Torts
    • Property 

Please note that these competencies cannot be completed at UVic Law and must be completed before applying.

Application deadlines

Applications for NCA positions are due March 31 (4 p.m. PST).

Admission requirements

A complete application will include:

  1. Submission of the 
  2. Payment of the application fee.
  3. Your academic record from law school and all post-secondary studies (transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation).
  4. A copy of your NCA Assessment Report.
  5. Your most recent NCA Examination Summary Report.
  6. Proof of English proficiency if your first language is not English.

Your application will be considered if:

  • you have credentials in law from universities outside of Canada
  • your academic record has been evaluated by the NCA
  • you have demonstrated competency in the following core subjects through NCA examinations or previous legal education:
    • Canadian Criminal Law and Procedure
    • Canadian Constitutional Law
    • Foundations of Canadian Law
    • Contracts
    • Torts
    • Property

Requirements and Application Information

NCA Certificates of Qualification

The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is responsible for granting Certificates of Qualification, which are recognized by various Canadian law societies for admission to the Bar.

Decisions of the NCA regarding requirements for this certificate do not guarantee admission to UVic Law. Admission is competitive and subject to available space. Information about the Certificates of Qualification can be found by contacting the .

English language requirement

If your first language is not English, we require you to submit proof of English proficiency by one of the following means:

  • Completion of three years of post-secondary education in which the primary language of instruction was English.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 100 or higher on the Internet-based test (iBT), with no less than 25 on each of the individual components, or a score of 600 (out of a possible 677 points) on the paper-based test.

Transcripts in languages other than English must be accompanied by a notarized English translation. 

Tuition and fees

If you are admitted on a full-time basis (6 or more units), you will be charged a flat tuition rate for the term, plus applicable student fees. If you are taking less than a full course load (less than 6 units), you will be charged per unit of course work, plus applicable student fees.
