Academic Writing Requirement

The Academic Writing Requirement (AWR) is a university-wide requirement. If you’re enrolled in a degree program you must complete an AWR-designated course (ATWP 135, ATWP 110, ENSH 101, ENSH 102 or ENGR 110) unless you have received or completed at least one of the following:

  • For those who graduated in years when BC provincial exams were offered, a score of at least 86% on the BC English Provincial Examination, or English 12 First Peoples Provincial Examination, within the three years immediately before admission
  • A final grade of at least 86% in an approved English 12 equivalent course from other Canadian provinces (as well as from BC in years when BC provincial exams were not offered) within the three years immediately before admission
  • Transfer credit for ATWP 135, ENSH 101, ENSH 102 or ENGR 110, or AWR-designated level credit
  • A degree from a recognized English-speaking university

We recommend that you speak to an academic adviser to determine whether you have met your AWR requirement. We would also like to note that transfer students who are admitted as third-year students should complete the AWR during their first Winter Session. Nursing and block-transfer students should consult their academic advisers for information about their deadline for completing the requirement. See Academic Advising to get in touch with an adviser.

We also suggest taking a glance at the Which course is right for me? page in order to help you decide which class (or classes, if you are interested!) you would like to take.
