Current students
We want students to succeed in our courses. Here are some of our favourite resources for students who want extra help with their writing.
Campus resources
In addition to class textbooks and materials in your ATWP classes, there are a number of resources available across campus to support your learning.
Centre for Academic Communication
The Centre for Academic Communication provides free one-on-one tutoring to help students build their writing skills and proficiency in English. The CAC also runs workshops that address common problems in academic writing. You can book appointments online, drop in for help, or even access tutoring online. The Centre for Academic Communication is located in Rooms 135J, K, L, and M in the Academic Help corridor of the Learning Commons, in the McPherson Library.
番茄社区 Libraries
UVic Libraries staff members offer students help with their research. The Research Help section of the library's website includes links to eTutorials on basic research skills; it is easiest to find these materials on the page specifically designed for students taking an Academic Writing Requirement (AWR) class.
Students can also ask questions by email or talk to a subject librarian by phone. All first year students can request individual research help for any course through the Personal Librarian Program.
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
The CALL facility offers software, audio, and video resources for language learners, including English as an additonal language (EAL) learners. Resources are available on an individual, drop-in basis. The CALL facility is located in the basement of the Clearihue building (CLE A051). You can contact the CALL facility by phone 250-721-8959 or by email calllab@uvic.ca.
Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL)
The Centre for Accessible Learning works with faculty and students to promote educational equity and accessibility for students with disabilities. CAL's mission is to support students who may have a learning disability, ADHD, mental health issues or a long-term recurring physical or sensory disability, in achieving their academic goals.
If you could benefit from the support of CAL's programs, or need an academic accommodation to address barriers in your education, register with the Centre from Accessible Learning.
Online resources
There are many external recourses that can help students with their writing skills. We recommend the following:
- (OWL) at Purdue University houses writing resources for students and community members. These services are offered free of charge and will help with many writing projects.
- provides a foundation for effective academic communication. It helps writers present their ideas in a clear, precise, and inclusive manner.
- has online workshops on a range of topics, including some specifically for students learning English as an additional language.
- , writing resources from the Modern Language Association.
- , an accessible online guide to style, usage, and grammar.
