Escalate

Most conflicts can be resolved by the people involved, but some need extra help. If you have a conflict, talk to your supervisor or contact a UVic office for support.

Supervisors

If you’ve not already done so, contacting your supervisor is a great first step towards support. They can provide coaching, advice and/or direct you to the appropriate support office or learning opportunity. 

Employee groups

Primary support for: Employees

Your employee group can support you through workplace conflict. They offer protection for you to speak up about safety and unfair treatment and can advocate for you with UVic. 

Human Resources

Primary support for: Leaders

Human Resources consultants help leaders handle conflicts with employees by giving advice and support.

We want to help resolve disputes before they turn into formal complaints. This applies to policy, legislation and collective agreements. We encourage you to first attempt to resolve issues at the unit/department level. If these efforts are unsuccessful, reach out for advice, support and guidance around next steps.

Faculty Relations & Academic Administration (FRAA)

Primary support for: Academic Leaders 

We support academic leaders who manage conflict within their units as it relates to faculty and librarians. Start by contacting your unit’s faculty relations consultant once you’ve gathered all the relevant facts about the issue.

Indigenous Academic & Community Engagement (IACE)

Primary support for: Students, Staff, Faculty

Our goal is to make the academic environment better for Indigenous students and staff.

We address racism, provide conflict resolution resources and offer guidance to improve support within the institution.

Office of the Vice-President Indigenous

Primary support for: Indigenous Staff & Faculty

The  helps and supports Indigenous staff and faculty.

This help might include advice on protocols, strategies to solve conflicts and ways to prevent them. The OVPI staff can help academic leaders support Indigenous students, staff and faculty.

This suggests a proactive way to make Indigenous community members in the institution have a better experience and well-being.

General Counsel

Primary support for: Leaders

The Office of the General Counsel provides on-site strategic legal advice to all levels of the University's administration. Our mandate includes protecting the university's legal corporate interests. We typically support those acting on behalf of the UVic, like senior leaders, deans, chairs/directors or administrators.

We can help you interpret university policies, avoid or navigate grievances, launch litigation, negotiate contracts, mediate significant conflict, and more.

Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (OHSE)

Primary support for: Employees

OHSE helps leaders and employees handle safety disputes about procedures, protocols, and policy.

We can help you with workplace safety. We can explain policies and regulations, give advice, investigate, provide resources and help resolve issues.

We also help employers deal with WorksafeBC claims related to workplace bullying and harassment.

Equity and Human Rights (EQHR)

Primary support for: Students, Staff, Faculty, Leaders 

We provide advice, one-on-one coaching and education as well as resolution options under the Discrimination and Harassment and Sexualized Violence Prevention and Response policies.

We have informal ways to resolve issues, like mediation, facilitated conversations, healing circles, agreements or assessments.

We also provide formal resolution options, involving investigation to determine policy breaches.

Campus Security Services

Primary support for: Students, Staff, Faculty

Campus Security officers can help in the moment a conflict is occurring.

Call us at the time of a conflict, not afterwards. We’re available 24/7 at 250-721-7599. Our team can outline options and support to prevent conflict from escalating.

Our Personal Safety Coordinators can help and refer those affected by an incident to get support. 

Internal Audit

Primary support for: Employees 

Please inform us if a conflict involves retaliation for reporting financial irregularities or conflicts of interest. The safe disclosure process is confidential and anonymous. 

Ombudsperson

Primary support for: Students

The helps students with their rights, responsibilities and conflicts.

We facilitate communication, mediate, problem-solve, assist with appeals, investigate and address student concerns and more. Contact us if you’ve tried to resolve a conflict and still feel like the process has been unfair or incomplete.  

Student Life

Primary support for: Students 

We help students resolve non-academic misconduct issues.

We can help you distinguish between a conflict, complaint, incident or performance issue. We offer support for students involved in conflict, whether it’s a formal intake or an informal consultation.
