Assistant Professor

Assistant Professor of Music Technology, Full-time, tenure-track, research stream

The School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track research stream faculty position in Music Technology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is 1 January 2025 or 1 July 2025, as negotiated.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,276 - $126,341 at the Assistant Rank. Qualifications
Candidates should have a doctorate in a field related to music technology. ABD candidates will be considered.

Requirements
Applicants for this research position will demonstrate research expertise that engages with one or more of the following areas: music and AI, audio signal processing, spatial/immersive audio, psychoacoustics, game audio, AR (augmented reality), and VR (virtual reality). Experience with one or more of recording, music production, performance, composition, or music studies is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized, externally funded, competitive research profile, with potential for collaborative projects with colleagues and graduate students in the Faculties of Fine Arts and/or Engineering and Computer Science. 

The successful candidate will support our Combined Program in Music and Computer Science, our graduate MMus in Music Technology, and other School of Music programs (BMus, BA, MMus, MA, PhD). They will teach courses related to music technology at undergraduate and graduate levels, and will have ample opportunity to contribute to program and curriculum development.

Qualified candidates will espouse a commitment to pedagogical innovation and inclusive approaches to teaching, curriculum, and assessment by demonstrating an ability to teach a diverse student body with a range of perspectives, experiences, and cultures. The ability to engage broader subject areas (the history or theory of popular, electronic, or computer music, sound studies, etc.) is an asset. Applicants must display the required professionalism to operate in a collegial academic environment, with evidence of collaboration considered an asset.

The UVic School of Music is dedicated to experiential learning and training for musicians and music scholars, turning passion into profession. The School is home to 45 performers, composers, educators, theorists, musicologists, and professional staff, as well as 190 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. We offer Bachelor of Music degrees in composition, music education, performance, musicology and sound studies, and musical arts along with a combined degree in Music and Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The School offers graduate degrees in composition, performance, musicology and sound studies, and music technology.
