Situated at the 番茄社区 Libraries, on the territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day, the Head of Advanced Research Services (Head ARS) reports to the Associate University Librarian for Advanced Research Services (AUL ARS). The Head ARS coordinates the planning, development, and delivery of interdisciplinary services to support the research needs of students, post-doctoral researchers, and faculty members.
The Head ARS supervises a team of librarians who primarily serve disciplines in Science, Engineering, and Health. The Head will develop and coordinate an innovative outreach program to better understand and meet the information needs of STEM and Health students, researchers, and faculty members at UVic. The Head ARS is responsible for the planning and delivery of the Libraries’ data services including discovery, analysis, and research data management.
The Head also oversees UVic Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC), a vibrant multidisciplinary facility that currently offers training in research software applications including data analysis, GIS and mapping, multimedia editing, AI applications for research, 3D design and virtual and augmented reality. The DSC also functions as a makerspace providing access to fabrication tools including 3D printers, poster printers, and laser cutters.
Responsibilities
- Hiring, supervising, coaching, and developing a high-functioning and collegial team of librarians and DSC staff.
- Developing an innovative outreach plan to better understand the needs of students, instructors, and researchers and to identify further opportunities for library engagement, particularly in STEM.
- Coordinating research data management (RDM) instruction and services, and administering UVic’s Borealis data repository.
- Planning and coordinating library services related to data discovery, cleaning, and analysis.
- Coordinating systematic review instruction and knowledge synthesis research partnerships.
- Working with the DSC Manager to design a comprehensive research software instruction framework that is aligned with UVic’s Digital Learning Plan and with the research priorities of the University.
- Working with colleagues to connect researchers, students, and faculty with the Libraries’ services and infrastructure in open publishing, description and discovery, and digital preservation.
- Working with the AUL ARS to determine in-kind contributions to faculty research proposals, helping to track and manage these commitments, and facilitating library participation in grant-funded projects.
- Working with the AUL ARS to align and integrate services with related units at the university including the Office of the VP Research, the UVic Research Office, Research Computing, research centres, and departmental labs.
- Working with the AUL ARS to develop a program of assessment for all ARS service areas.
- Ensuring best practices for communication, information sharing, and documentation across all members of ARS.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of library science.
- An additional advanced degree in a STEM or Health discipline, strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success developing and delivering library services for one or more STEM or Health disciplines.
- Strong evidence of innovation and success in STEM or Health outreach and engagement.
- Demonstrated experience in research data management, including data management plans and data curation. Familiarity with the Dataverse platform is an asset.
- Supervisory skills and experience working with and managing a team would be an asset
- Demonstrated experience working on grant-funded research teams.
- Demonstrated ability to master a wide variety of technologies and research tools through self-directed learning.
- Demonstrated experience delivering data services, including tools and methods for discovery, cleaning, and analysis is an asset.
- Significant experience developing workshops, instruction, and training, including at the graduate level.
- A record of peer-reviewed publication.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
- A big picture understanding of the Canadian national research environment, including funding agencies, infrastructure, and advanced research computing.
- A high-level understanding of the university research enterprise, and history of effective collaboration with campus partners including the VP Research, the Research Office, Faculty Research Officers, and Research Computing.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility, and experience working successfully with a wide variety of people and encouraging their participation and involvement.

Salary and Benefits
The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $125,000 - $156,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan It is expected that the successful candidate will spend some portion of their time at the 番茄社区, but remote work arrangements are possible.
Scholarly and Professional Activities
Participates in Libraries and university committees, councils, task forces, and teams as appropriate. Keeps up to date with developments in digital scholarship in the profession and related fields and on broader issues that affect the practice of librarianship. Participates in professional organizations as appropriate. Undertakes research and engages in scholarship as appropriate.
