Assistant Professor

The School of Health Information Science invites applications for the position of full-time Assistant Professor (Research Stream) with eligibility for tenure or tenure track, earliest appointment effective September 1, 2024 or as negotiated.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $125,721 - $155,302. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach core courses in both the undergraduate and graduate programs in health informatics;
  • Develop and conduct a research program in a key or emerging area in health informatics;
  • Engage in curriculum development with the faculty;
  • Participate in the life of the school, including serving on committees and curriculum working groups;
  • Work closely with the Senior Lab Instructor for assigned courses;
  • Help with graduate education by serving on graduate student committees and supervising graduate students including both Masters and PhD level students;
  • Have completed all requirements for a PhD in Health Informatics or Biomedical Informatics prior to appointment.

Requirements

A doctoral degree (or doctoral degree near completion) in Health Informatics or Biomedical Informatics.

Applicants should have a good understanding of Health Informatics and strong communication, organizational and teaching skills. Applicants should also demonstrate potential for a strong research program in one or more key or emerging areas in health informatics. Applicants should have the potential to develop a strong research program in their area that complements current research at the school and should have evidence of publication and dissemination of their work.

Evidence of teaching and research (i.e., publications) in one or more core and emerging areas of health informatics and health information technology should be included in the application.

The School of Health Information Science is known nationally and internationally and has pioneered curricula in health informatics since 1981. The school offers several degrees: a BSc in Health Information Science, a Combined Major in Computer Science and Health Information Science, a Masters in Health Informatics and a PhD in Health Informatics, a certificate in clinical terminologies as well as a double Masters degree in collaboration with the School of Nursing.

The Health Information Science undergraduate degree prepares students to work in all sectors of healthcare, including hospitals, government, consulting, healthcare software industry and allied health fields involving technology. Graduate degrees prepare students to work as leaders in the health informatics industry as well as academia.

The faculty in the School of Health Information Science have a long history of generating significant research and curriculum development grants and contracts and are involved in local, national and international projects related to health informatics.
