Updated faculty equity course

February 16, 2023

Submitted on behalf of Equity and Human Rights and the Vice-President Academic and Provost’s Office.

September 2022 marked the first full year of offering "Increasing Equity in Decision Processes.” This online course is required for everyone who participates in or leads Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure (ARPT) committees for faculty as well as senior search committees at the UVic.

In this time, over 600 people have taken the course and provided strongly positive feedback—85% of course participants indicated that they found the course prepared them to contribute to equitable ARPT decisions "A great deal" or "A moderate amount."

The course

"Increasing Equity in Decision Making" was developed collaboratively by Equity and Human Rights (EQHR) and the Vice-President Academic & Provost (VPAC).

The course covers a wide range of topics that support committees in making fair and equitable decisions in all their work. Some key content areas include:

  • The impacts of equity and inequity on the university, and common biases in academic decisions
  • UVic commitments and responsibilities with respect to upholding equity, diversity and inclusion
  • How biases shape our perceptions of candidates and colleagues, and strategies to reduce their impact on decisions
  • Ways to shift towards inclusive definitions of excellence and how to embed these in our standards, criteria, merit and fit
  • Collective responsibilities for Indigenization and decolonization
  • Ways to have equitable, unbiased meetings
  • What to do when challenges arise in committees

The course also includes interactive self-check activities, reflection questions, videos, and resource links to support learning.

Updated content

Moving into its second year, the project developers reviewed feedback and implemented a number of updates to build on the effectiveness of this course. An updated version of the course was relaunched in September 2022, and so far, over 150 people have taken the updated version of the course.
