Regalia (cap & gown)

Graduating students wear UVic academic regalia to symbolize and celebrate your achievements.

If you're an Indigenous student, you can choose to wear traditional dress or UVic regalia.

Graduating students

Diplomas & certificates

Graduates receiving diplomas and certificates wear black gowns and mortarboards.

Bachelor & Masters' degrees

Graduates receiving bachelor's and master's degrees wear black gowns and mortarboards, with hoods in the colours associated with their degrees. The master's hoods also have mitred neckpieces and narrow bands of black velvet.

Doctoral degrees

Graduates receiving doctoral degrees wear gowns in the Cambridge style (red front facings and sleeve linings), black mortarboards with red tassels, and hoods in the Oxford style (red with blue lining and gold trim).

Regalia rentals

Regalia can be rented from the UVic Bookstore. On the day of your convocation ceremony, you can pick it up from the Board and Senate Chambers in A-wing of the Jamie Cassels Centre.

Other regalia

Honorary degree recipients

The regalia for honorary degree recipients is predominantly red. The gown is in the Cambridge style, the hood is in the Aberdeen pattern, and the mortarboard is black with red cord trim and tassel.
