Honours
The honours program is for third- and fourth-year BA and BSc major students who want to study anthropology more intensively and independently. It’s ideal for students considering a professional career or moving on to graduate school.
You’ll join a small group of like-minded students if accepted into the program. You’ll attend an honours seminar and work one-on-one with a faculty member on a research project of your choice.
Program requirements
You’ll take an additional 7.5 units in addition to your major program. This includes ANTH 499, the honours seminar you’ll take in your final term. One course will be approved by the honours advisor as your “honours preparation” course.
Honours advisor & supervisor
Current honours advisor: Dr. April Nowell
The honours advisor is responsible for advising students on the honours program elements of their degree, admissions to the honours program and shepherding the cohort through the honours seminar.
An honours supervisor guides each honours student. This is a professor in the department who has agreed to supervise and guide your research over the final year of your honours degree.
Contact the honours advisor with any questions about connecting with an honours supervisor, scoping out an honours essay project and which course to use as your “honours preparation” credit.
How to apply
You can apply to the honours program after you have declared an anthropology major and completed ANTH 100, 200, 240, 250 and 260. You must have a minimum combined GPA of 6.5 in all the 200-level courses.
Give some thought to a possible research project. Contact a professor who might be suitable to guide your work and ask if they would be your honours supervisor. The honours advisor can help you with this.
