There are approximately 55 positions ranging from 98 to 150 hours each for the period between January and April 2025. Most positions are for about 98 hours in total and are distributed as 8 to 12 weekly hours for 12 to 14 weeks. Teaching Assistants mark assignments and tests, instruct tutorials/labs, or work in the Assistance Centre, which provides one-to-one tutoring with ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø students who are enrolled in our first- and second-year Mathematics and Statistics courses. All positions require TAs to be available on campus and face to face. Priority will first be given to Graduate Students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics follows the priority appointment procedures in Article 13.02 (Appointment Procedures) and Appendix A of the CUPE 4163 Collective Agreement.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites expressions of interest for the delivery of one or more courses to be offered in person in the Spring term, January – April 2025. In keeping with Article 13.01 of the Agreement between UVic and CUPE 4163 (Component 3), Expressions of Interest are being sought from Graduate Students, adjunct faculty, Postdoctoral Fellows and sessional instructors in the department as well as from other interested parties.

The UVic Undergraduate Mathematics Competition is held annually in the fall. The competition will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 between 4:00-6:00 pm in ECS 124. There are monetary prizes. To participate, just show up.

Our current PhD student Shannon Ogden received the Lieutenant Governor's Silver Medal for outstanding Master's thesis at the convocation ceremony in June. The title of her thesis is Saturation Problems on Graphs. Congratulations Shannon!

Every year, we recognize the student with the highest graduating GPA in the Faculty of Science with the Faculty of Science Jubilee Medal. This year, we're proud to celebrate Nick MacGregor (he/him), who graduated with a BSc (Honours) in combined Mathematics and Statistics.

Congratulations to PhD student, Yasaman Shahhosseini who won the first-place award for her poster presentation "Spatiotemporal fractal based analysis of fMRI time series", at the 2024 Canadian Statistics Student Conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Yasaman is co-supervised by Michelle Miranda and Farouk Nathoo.

Benjamin Frizzel won 2nd place for his undergraduate poster "Optimal Experimental Design using Simulated Annealing" at the 2024 Canadian Statistics Students Conference.

Trefor Bazett was awarded the 2024 PIMS Education Prize at the PIMS Changing the Culture Conference on May 17 in Vancouver. Trefor excels at teaching math in person and online and you can view his many math videos on YouTube. Congratulations Trefor!

Boualem Khouider's PhD student Carlos Sevilla won the award of outstanding student presentation at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, held in San Fransisco last 11-15 December, 2023.

Congratulations to Chris Eagle! He is this year’s recipient of the Harry Hickman Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Leadership. The Harry Hickman Award is the highest honour for teaching excellence at the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø. This award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and educational leadership.

IMAGINING UVic is a summer camp intended to encourage young women to pursue STEM fields. The program will be held on the UVic campus, providing participants with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the university environment. The program will run July 2 – 5, 2024, from 10:00am to 3:30pm each day. Interactive sessions lead by cutting-edge researchers will introduce participants to new and exciting math concepts which go beyond the BC curriculum. Participants will also have various opportunities to interact and form connections with professors and graduate students in mathematics.

Congratulations to our postdoctoral fellow Kehinde Olobatuyi for being awarded a Research Excellence, Diversity and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Kehinde's research uses statistics to help fight emerging infectious diseases. He is supervised by Laura Cowen.

Dr. Christopher Eagle of the ·¬ÇÑÉçÇø has been named the recipient of the Canadian Mathematics Society (CMS) 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award for his innovative teaching style, student mentorship, and depth of subject knowledge. Congratulations Chris!

Congratulations to our Master's student Kate Nimegeers for winning a poster prize in the AARMS-CMS Student Poster Session at the 2023 CMS Winter Meeting.

Congratulations to Andrew Lane and Nick Sima for winning the UVic Undergraduate Math Competition. Andrew was the overall winner while Nick was the winner among first and second year students.

Congratulations to our PhD student Shannon Ogden, who has been named a 2023 Vanier Scholar.
