Opportunities for Mathematics and Statistics Students

Students in our programs have access to a wide and evolving range of extra-curricular educational opportunities. These resources complement curricular resources, thereby helping students attain the high-level goals, but they can also serve as a bridge between their university and professional lives. The following opportunities are current examples:

  • enhance their education with a co-op or work experience program;
  • the flexibility to shape their degree program to focus on areas of interest either individually or with a department advisor;
  • take the relevant courses to be prepared for the first few actuarial exams;
  • be accredited as an Associate Statistician (A. Stat.) by the ;
  • be well-prepared for graduate school by taking an appropriate collection of upper-level courses, chosen in consultation with a faculty member or advisor;
  • take part in International Exchange, and have the courses taken count towards a UVic degree;
  • earn a teaching certificate concurrently with a Bachelor’s degree;
  • participate in the course union, Students in Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics (SUMS), and take part in its activities;
  • engage in outreach activities such as “Math Mania” through the ;
  • take part in the UVic Math Contest, the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition, or other competitions;
  • undertake an independent research project in an area of interest, if a faculty mentor is available, as either or through a research program;
  • be employed as a Teaching Assistant and mark papers, invigilate exams, or help / tutor students in the Assistance Centre, if qualified and if positions are available. 
Communications Security Establishment (CSE) is currently looking for students to work in a dynamic, innovative operational environment and be part of a team applying your analytical and problem-solving skills to a variety of problems in support of the Signals Intelligence and Cyber missions. You must be registered as a 2nd , 3rd , 4th year undergraduate or be a full-time graduate student in a recognized post-secondary program in Canada in a field related to the position, such as math, computer science, engineering with a strong math background.
