Human powered vessel safety
Transport Canada defines Human Powered Vessels (HPVs) as kayaks, canoes, row boats, inflatables, river-rafts, or vessels that are equipped with propulsion motors less than 10 HP. Under Transport Canada regulations, human powered vessels used by UVic for purposes other than recreation are categorized as non-pleasure commercial vessels and are subject to a specific regulatory framework.
UVic has created a Human Powered Vessel Safety Checklist with guidance notes to ensure HPV operators meet their safety and regulatory obligations while on the water.
UVic requires operators of human powered vessels to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC) as the minimum training requirement.
To ensure your project is meeting its safety and regulatory obligations, please review the following resources and complete where applicable.
