The Faculty of Education is proud to be home to the Department of Indigenous Education. We are committed to supporting the success of Indigenous students in all our programs.
We are also committed to:
- honouring Indigenous ways of learning and teaching,
- meeting the Indigenous language revitalization needs of Indigenous communities,
- educating both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and
- making our learning environment more welcoming to Indigenous people.

Should you choose to apply at UVic, we encourage you to self-identify as Indigenous during the admissions process so we can send you this relevant scholarship information. Please note that this voluntary declaration will not be used for admission decisions. Documentation of Indigenous ancestry is not required.

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate student born on Turtle Island (North America, including all areas from Mexico to Alaska) who is entering the Faculty of Education and has demonstrated financial need.
Applications are submitted through the online scholarship application accessed via a student’s Online Tools.
Value: $2,000 | Number of awards annually: Dependant on applications
One or more awards of $2,000 each are given to Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education entering or continuing in the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization (BEd ILR) program. Applicants must submit a statement (a maximum of 500 words) describing their interest in/aspiration to become a K-12 teacher. Part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.
Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

One award is given to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education enrolled in either the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization who is developing their own language proficiency and has a strong record of contributing to their/a language community through their work. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a community group/member providing evidence of the contributions the applicant has made. Completed applications and reference letters must be submitted to the Faculty of Education office by May 31. Part-time students (enrolled in at least 4.5 units) are eligible for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students in either the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Education and who are enrolled in Indigenous Language courses or an Indigenous language program. Part-time students are eligible for this award.
Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of a committee formed by the Department of Linguistics. The committee will include members from the Faculty of Education.

One award of $1,000 is given to an Indigenous undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education enrolled in the Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency (CILP), the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization (DILR), or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization (BEd ILR) who is developing their language proficiency and has a strong record of contributing to their community through their use of Indigenous language in their work. Preference will be given to students from Vancouver Island Nations.
Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation (maximum 300 words) from a community group/member, not related to the applicant, providing evidence of the contributions the applicant has made to their community through the use of Indigenous language. Part-time students (minimum 3.0 units) are eligible for this award.
Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Campus-wide support
UVic offers support to Indigenous students throughout their university experience – from their first contact through graduation and beyond. UVic’s Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE) connects Indigenous students with the educational, financial and cultural resources available on campus and in local communities. These include:
