About
K’alhwh7acw!/Hello, my name is Roger John and I am a Counsellor for Indigenous Students.
I am Tsalashmec (People of the Lakes/Seton Lake Band) of the St’at’imc Nation from the peoples called Interior Salish. I have been a visitor on Coast Salish and Straits Salish Territory for 30 years. I have a master’s degree in counselling psychology and I am a registered clinical counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors.
I practice counselling using foundations of Indigenous wellness (respect for one’s culture, land, ancestors, relatives, relationships and intergenerational trauma and strengths. I also utilize mainstream approaches to counselling such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, strengths focused counselling and Somatic Transformation Therapy.
In addition to my work with Indigenous students, I also have experience providing counselling services to students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds including country of origin, economic background, different mental health challenges and sexual orientation.
I always try to meet the student where they are at and work to provide an approach that is respectful and relevant to them. I look forward to meeting students and supporting you on your journey.
To make an appointment with me please phone 250-721-8563 and tell SWC Student Welcome Team staff that you are an Indigenous student who wishes to see a counsellor for Indigenous students. Or ask staff at the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement for a referral.
Kukwstumkalap/thanks to all.
Conflict of interest statement
Students I taught undergraduate and/or graduate courses to should note that due to a potential conflict of interest I am unable to see them as clients.
I have worked in multiple roles at the 番茄社区 and for reasons of ethical principle I will strive to maintain clear and respectful boundaries in my counselling relationships.
