Lorna B
About
Hi there! My name is Lorna (they/she), and I’m one of the advanced practicum counsellors here at the Student Wellness Centre. I’m a white settler of European ancestry (Irish, Scottish) born and raised in Calgary, Alberta on Treaty 7 territory, which is the territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (the Piikani, Kainai, and Siksika Nations), the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney Nations), also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6). I’ve been an uninvited visitor on the unceded territories of the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ people since I started graduate school in 2019 here at UVic, where I’m currently completing my PhD in Clinical Psychology.
In my down time, I enjoy playing Dungeons & Dragons (my character just hit level 10!), video games, painting, as well as hiking, camping, gardening, and other outdoorsy activities that allow me to slow down and be present.
Counselling approach
My intention in my approach to counselling is to foster a collaborative, non-judgemental therapeutic environment that invites and honours my client’s autonomy, as well as the unique lived experiences and knowledge that they possess as experts of their own lives. Using integrative, complimentary techniques drawn from a variety of different therapeutic frameworks (DBT, ACT, CPT, Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems), my goal is to support clients in navigating their inner and outer worlds, explore where and how they make meaning, and expand the space around challenges or difficulties in ways that make room for new possibilities.
