Non-UVRA Events

UVRA also aims to involve its membership through different valuable resources and educational programs offered by other organizations (i.e., AROHE, CURAC, and many more) that might interest some of its valued members. There are also invitations from various departments at UVic, and from students looking for 55+ participants for their research studies, received by UVRA for distribution to its membership. These items are first made known to UVRA members via emails, when appropriate, and then placed on the UVRA website under the Non-UVRA Events navigation bar.

Social Relationships: Key to a Happy & Successful Retirement

Sponsored by Road Scholar

Wednesday, September 18
10-11:30 a.m. PDT, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. MDT,
12-1:30 p.m. CDT, 1-2:30 p.m. EDT

AROHE's 2024 Virtual Summit will explore the importance of social relationships in retirement with an engaging presentation followed by a panel discussion. In May 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory titled "Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation," shedding light on "the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in our country." Even predating the COVID-19 pandemic, around half of U.S. adults reported experiencing measurable levels of loneliness. Disconnection profoundly impacts mental, physical, and societal well-being. This presentation will help retirees and the organizations that serve them to better understand and facilitate better social connections.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, professor of psychology and neuroscience and director of the Social Connection & Health Lab at Brigham Young University. Her presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Kaye Jeter, Central State University; Valerie Ventre-Hutton, UC Berkeley; and Dr. Louise Nasmith, University of British Columbia, who will share their personal experiences related to this topic.

PRESENTER: Grant Marven - Board Member

BIOGRAPHY: Grant Marven

I have been amazed by technology and engineering all my life, from getting my first personal computer in the early 80s, to earning a degree in Computer Science and later a Master’s in Computer Science, to working in the firmware engineering field for 25+ years. Firmware engineering involves writing computer code for computers on circuit boards. I worked in the audio industry for over 20 years and was the Director of Engineering at a local design center for a Seattle-based company before I retired.

I also have an interest in languages and cultures. I am currently learning Mandarin. I have exchanged English lessons for Mandarin lessons, leading to many Chinese friends. I have adopted a Chinese name (小山 Xiǎoshān, which means "small mountain") to make things easier for my Chinese friends. Currently, I am on the board of the Victoria Canada-China Friendship Association.
