Copyright basics

Copyright falls under federal jurisdiction in Canada and is governed by the .  The Act provides legal protection to .

The Copyright Act contains fair dealing exceptions for uses pertaining to:

  • research,
  • private study,
  • education,
  • parody,
  • satire, 
  • criticism,
  • review, or
  • news reporting.

Instructors at educational institutions are allowed to use, copy, perform, etc. works in the classroom or on the premises of an educational institution for teaching and training purposes, subject to restrictions.
