Tips for Success

One tip that I would offer new international students starting their program at UVic is... Take the time to learn what services and supports are available to you. The campus is full of amazing resources, and it is never too early to connect to them. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help, whether to your professor, TA, department, the ICS team, or someone else. Everyone wants to see you succeed and thrive in your time at UVic.

One of the best ways for international students to get connected during their time at UVic would be... Explore the campus and learn about how vibrant UVic and Victoria can be. There are so many clubs, groups, community events, and other great places to connect beyond the classroom. University is a precious time to investigate your interests and passions – try to take advantage. It can feel intimidating to make that first connection, or attend that first event or clubs meeting, but everyone has to start somewhere!

Student Success Tip: Try to make a connection with a friend or study buddy in each of your classes. It can be so helpful to have someone to ask questions to and discuss what you are learning with. Try to see what learning and social spaces are available through your department. Reading rooms, course unions, and peer study groups are all great places to get support and connect with your classmates and community.

About

I grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, in a family of Filipino and Irish heritage. I am a graduate of the Gender Studies program at UVic and was very involved with student advocacy during my time on campus. Since graduating, I have worked in the community sector, primarily in the areas of housing, settlement services, and addressing gender-based violence. I also have an MA in Art History and a background in visual arts, and I am passionate about the role of art in building community. Through these experiences, I have learned how much is to be gained from connecting with different cultures and fostering diversity and equity. I am thrilled to be back as a guest in Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ Territories and returning to UVic in the role of supporting international students.

Interests

Taking on DIY projects and learning new skills like ceramics and sewing. Visiting artist-run centres and galleries and seeing live music and theatre. I love camping and canoeing and will swim every chance I get.

Fun fact

I’ve worked in several wood-fired sourdough bakeries and love to bake in my spare time. I’m currently trying to perfect my lemon tart recipe!
