Tips for Success

One tip that I would offer new international students starting their program at UVic is... Embrace the beauty as well as the challenges of your journey. Studying in a different country is a rewarding endeavor with much to learn and adjust to. UVic offers extensive support for international students, so make sure to utilize these resources. Start by exploring UVic’s website and our ICS pages.

One of the best ways for international students to get connected during their time at UVic would be... Be open to trying new things—whether it's picking up a new hobby, learning a new skill, or trying an activity for the first time. UVic and the city of Victoria offer a wealth of opportunities to connect with others who share your interests.

Student Success Tip: The library is more than a place to study at or borrow books. The library offers various resources to support your academic journey, including , tutorials, research support, help guides, and much more. Don’t hesitate to ask librarians for assistance with any aspect of your studies, big or small.

About

I'm originally from Egypt and attended graduate school in the United States before moving to Victoria. I have a strong background in both education and settlement work. Before starting in my role at UVic, I worked for a non-profit organization where I helped newcomer families settle in Victoria.

I also have extensive experience supporting international students as a Teaching Assistant at Iowa State University, where I pursued a PhD in Applied Linguistics & Technology, and as a Mentor for international students at the University of Delaware, where I completed my MA.

My background and experience have fueled my passion for intercultural understanding and my dedication to creating welcoming and inclusive environments for international students.

Interests

I enjoy cooking and baking with my children and spending weekends relaxing by the beach. For my "me-time," I love eating a delicious bowl of Ramyeon while watching a Korean drama.

Fun fact

I once walked barefoot on burning coal, 2 metres long, without getting hurt. This was during a workshop designed to help attendees discover their inner strength. This experience is a good memory that boosts my self-confidence—if I can walk on burning coal, I can overcome any challenge in my life!
